Thailand pleases tourists and locals all year round with the beauty of nature, warm climate and hospitable atmosphere of endless rest and festivities. But there is a special time for the country when everyone rushes to the north of the country, where for several days the enthusiastic voices of visitors to the annual Flower Festival - one of the largest and most colorful events comparable to the cherry blossom in Japan - do not stop. In February, the city of Chiang Mai turns into a real work of art - it is decorated up and down with floral arrangements that the best florists in the world are ready to present to the public.

In Thailand, the hot weather season begins in February, which means that hundreds of species of amazing tropical flowers are blooming all over the country. But it is not limited to them, because local gardeners skillfully grow plants that are unusual for the Thai climate exotic plants.

Holiday history

The name of the Chiang Mai province, where the celebration is held, translates as "many flowers", and earlier, according to legend, it was called the "Rose of the North". This is not without reason, because the city has always been famous for the variety of flora, it was here that the most beautiful and amazing types of flowers were grown, winning the hearts of guests of the northern capital of Thailand.

The festival was first held in 1977 and was not planned as an annual event. However, it was in for an amazing success among the locals, and there was no choice but to make the holiday traditional. It is held on the first weekend of February and gathers several thousand tourists who come to the country specifically to enjoy the delightful celebration.

With the influx of guests wishing to be part of the enchanting celebration, the economy of the province took off: during the festival, a variety of flowers, jewelry, souvenirs, unique drinks and food are sold everywhere.

What to see and visit

The celebration takes place in the city for 3 days - from Friday to Sunday in early February. The festival program is rich and varied, everyone will find interesting for himself. In the center, streets are blocked, festivities, parades take place, and Chiang Mai turns into a flower paradise for a couple of days.

Flower fair

Held on the first day of the celebration in Nong Buak Haad Park, where the best florists and gardeners present unique varieties of flowers, bred with a new color or interesting nuances. The "main" flower is the orchid - the symbol of the country, but tourists who want to buy beautiful flowers can find many other options here

Solemn parade

On the second day, the streets of Chiang Mai are especially crowded: on this day, from early morning until sunset, the entire center is blocked by a festive procession. Dressed artists and ordinary townspeople, incessant songs and dances, a column of painted mobile platforms decorated with flower arrangements Men, women, children - any tourist and resident of the province can join the parade on this day and become part of the significant celebration.

Beauty contest

Every girl in a Thai town dreams of taking part in the selection of the queen of the festival. The preparation sometimes lasts for months and consists in the selection of a hairstyle, a suitable outfit, floral decorations and accessories. Throughout all days, the contestants win the hearts of the jury and selection guests, after which the results are summed up on the third day. The winner is crowned and an enchanting party is held in her honor by the end of the day.

In addition to the above, the city hosts a variety of concert programs, entertainment shows for adults and children, flower arrangements competitions, in which the best gardeners in Thailand strive to take part. If you are planning to visit the flower festival, you must book a hotel in advance - a few weeks before the celebration, there are no free rooms in the city.

Lovers of not only spectacles, but also bread will also not remain indifferent to the celebration. Tents with delicious food and unique drinks are erected throughout the city, which are eager not only guests of the northern capital, but also local residents.

At the festival you can try:

  • Dishes from tropical fruits brought from all over Thailand
  • Roti national pancakes - a delicacy sprinkled with condensed milk and garnished with bananas and other fruits
  • Various types of ice cream - the favorite of many guests is coconut
  • Pad thai - rice noodles with sauce and seafood.

The national Thai cuisine is famous for its hot spices and herbs, but adherents of European dishes will not go hungry either.

Floral arrangements presented at the festival will win the heart of any guest. You can see more than 200 species of flora: wild orchids, lilies, cacti, roses, peonies and much more. Patrons are waiting for this festival to contribute to the decoration of the city, presenting amazing floral decorations, and the main motives are geometric patterns, images of the monarch of Thailand, Buddha, and many mythical creatures.
