Greenland is a northern archipelago with a complex fate, or rather, with a complex status. Geographically refers to North America, politically - to Europe. This autonomous region of Denmark held a referendum and voted for independence from Denmark, but delayed the withdrawal from Denmark until better times. It's unclear to what. Denmark is a member of the European Union, but Greenland is not. As in the status in social networks: everything is complicated.
In June 1985, Greenland decided on the national symbol - the national flag. Before that, there was a striped white-green-blue, then there were many options, as they announced a competition for a sketch of the flag. One of the favorites of the contest was a green flag, crossed out with white stripes. There is a reason for the green color of the flag –"Greenland"literally means"green country".
But as a result, the strange ("everything is complicated"), but spectacular red and white version won. The flag is divided horizontally, with a white stripe on top and red on the bottom. To the left of the center is a circle, also divided horizontally in a white-red scale, but vice versa: red from above, white from below.
It is believed that the white stripe symbolizes the ice (logically), which in Greenland is abundant, and the red - the ocean (as original!). The circle symbolizes, of course, the sun, rising and setting. There are other considerations about the circle: pack ice and fjords. This explanation further confuses everything, it remains to assume that the flag was created by avant-garde. But it still turned out beautiful and bright.
