Description of Erskine Stewart's Melville Private School

  • Established: 1972,
  • Number of students: more than 750,
  • Language of instruction: English,
  • Type: separate and mixed at different stages.

Erskine Stewart's Melville Schools (ESMS) is a private boarding school for students from 3 to 18 years old, located in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland.

The history of ESMS began with the merger of three separate educational institutions in 1972, which were schools for the separate education of boys and girls. By connecting academic staff, campuses and teaching methodologies, ESMS is now the largest family of independent schools in Europe.

At some educational stages, children are still educated separately: the middle school program for girls at Mary Erskine School, and boys at Stewart College. At the same time, students explore kindergarten groups, primary classes and the Sixth Form stage side by side with each other, regardless of gender.

Faculties and colleges

ESMS includes:

  • Kindergarten for teaching children from 3 years old,
  • Junior Department,
  • Mary Erskine School for girls from 12 to 18 years old,
  • Stewart College for boys from 12 to 18 years old,
  • The Sixth Form department is for students of both sexes 17-18 years old.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Boys and girls from 10 to 18 years old are accommodated in Dean Park House dormitories. Residential buildings can accommodate no more than 30 children.

More about the guesthouse:

  • Located on the grounds of Queensferry Road, Stewart's Melville College,
  • Separate bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms located on different floors for boys and girls,
  • Public areas: TV room, air hockey, billiards and football tables, computer room with Internet access, music studio and others,
  • Three meals a day: breakfasts and dinners on site, lunches - packed lunches for a snack at school.

Full board in Dean Park House will cost £24,930 per year.

Activities Erskine Stewart's Melville Private School

Almost every student participates in one of the 40 creative clubs: choir, orchestras, ensembles and other areas. The school has about 60 sports teams in more than 20 sports and allows students to devote enough time to developing their interests. Elective classes are organized immediately after academic classes - after lunch and in the evenings. At the same time, collective events are held: parties, seminars, intellectual and sports games, club meetings and others.

In Edinburgh, you can visit a variety of events throughout the year: from international festivals to exhibitions, from cooking classes to fashion shows. Students often take part in them as representatives of the school and as observers.

Scotland is a beautiful natural scenery and unique architectural monuments. Students will be able to explore all the sights on excursions that include various activities: skiing in Cairngorms, kayaking on Loch Lomond, golfing in St. Andrews.

  • The largest school network in Europe,
