8 best German boarding schools in Switzerland

Admission ages and entry requirements depend on the school. Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz is designed for students aged 12 to 19, while HIF offers multiple entry points and academic options. Document lists, interview arrangements, and German-language assessment should therefore be checked for the chosen school and program.

If a school requests the SSAT, the exam is available to students in grades 3–11 and assesses verbal, mathematics, and reading skills. It stipulates a writing sample that does not affect the score and may end with an unscored experimental section. International applicants can choose paper-based or Flex taking, while Prometric centers are available at Middle and Upper Levels.

Non-EU/EFTA students must obtain a visa from a Swiss embassy or consulate before entering Switzerland. Anyone who already holds a valid long-stay visa or residence permit issued by another Schengen state does not need a separate Swiss entry document.

For studies lasting less than one year, the permit applies to the full course of study. Permits for multi-year programs are issued for one year and may be renewed until studies end. Courses lasting up to 8 years are authorized.

Geneva cantonal guidance, last updated on 11 March 2025, lists these application documents:

• Confirmation of financial means or a sponsorship certificate using Form O,
• A certificate from the school confirming eligibility for admission,
• A criminal record extract,
• A written commitment to leave Switzerland after completing the course.
