What is IELTS?
The abbreviation stands for International English Language Testing System. This is a special test created according to certain standards and checking the knowledge of the English language for foreigners who are not native speakers.
IELTS is required for:
- admission to English-language schools and universities,
- employment in English-speaking companies,
- if a citizen of another country wants to immigrate to Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand,
- participation in an exchange program,
- testing your own knowledge,
- improving the qualification level of the subject teacher.
IELTS testing was created in 1990, and today there are about 500 test centers around the world. You can take the IELTS exam at any time of the year by appointment.
The list of test tasks includes checking the ability of the examiner to write, speak and read in English, to perceive foreign speech by ear - the structure of the test itself consists of four parts:
- listening,
- reading,
- writing,
- speaking.
The entire exam usually takes a little less than three hours.
Based on the results of the exam, a foreigner receives a certificate with the points indicated on it. Depending on the purpose of passing the exam, a citizen of another country needs to score a certain number of points. The results are received within two weeks from the date of passing the exam.
The certificate is valid for 2 years.

How is IELTS different from other international language tests?
- IELTS examiners provide results quickly, while other exams can stretch the test up to a month.
- IELTS is recognized by all English-speaking countries, institutions and companies, and its results are quoted in all foreign cities. This is the most reliable and universal way to prove your knowledge. Other tests, such as Duolingo, take into account only individual organizations.
- The IELTS task list can be compiled individually depending on the country where a foreigner plans to go to study or work. Other tests may be more stereotyped and monotonous, which is why the host party will not be able to fully assess the initial language level of a student or employee from another country.
What are IELTS courses for?
You can prepare for the IELTS exam on your own, with the help of Russian-speaking tutors, foreign tutors or courses based on educational institutions or from private teachers. All of these preparation formats are useful and necessary to successfully pass the IELTS test abroad.
IELTS courses are considered one of the most comprehensive methods of studying for foreign testing. Usually, they are created and carried out in the format of an integrated approach that covers all 4 stages of testing. In IELTS courses, a foreigner can analyze in detail all the main topics of the exam, delve into complex tasks and questions, and personally work out their weaknesses.
The organizers of IELTS courses often conduct mock testing for their students (or even more than one), which allows you not only to understand the tasks, but also to get acquainted with the procedure of the exam itself from the inside. In addition, students are taught how to correctly fill out exam forms so that they do not lower their own test scores due to incorrect entry of answers, they work out the rules of communication with examiners during the first three stages and in the process of passing the final part. Taking the test helps you feel more confident during the exam itself, not to worry about the presence of observers and when communicating with examiners at the Speaking stage.
In short, IELTS courses help foreigners reduce the stress level of the upcoming exam and prepare for it and its features well, without nerves.
Why is it better to take IELTS courses abroad?
In 2025, IELTS courses are conducted by many Russian-speaking organizations and private tutors. Students are offered both offline and online courses. But even the most relevant and modernized courses from Russian-speaking teachers cannot be compared with IELTS courses abroad. Preparation for the English language exam in an English-speaking environment is most effective for a foreigner.
Being in a natural language environment allows you to better concentrate on learning English. When a non-English-speaking student takes IELTS courses from teachers who speak the same language as them (say, in a Russian school), they know that they can always switch to their native language if they can't say something in English right away. But studying in an English-speaking environment develops creativity and resourcefulness of a foreigner so that he can find a solution to any problem situation on the exam.
If a foreigner takes IELTS courses abroad in the country where he plans to move later, then this will help him better understand the features of the local accent and other language nuances. And since IELTS tests are formed personally, taking into account the goals of a foreigner, all this knowledge will become a good language base to prove yourself in the exam as a confident near-native speaker.
English-speaking organizers of IELTS courses abroad receive up-to-date information about all changes in the rules for taking the test, so their students also find out all the necessary information quickly and with details.
If a foreigner is preparing for IELTS abroad at the university where he plans to apply later, then this can be a good addition to his portfolio of applicants upon admission. Many English-speaking universities value candidates who take preparatory courses on their basis, and not on third-party sites.
What are the IELTS courses abroad?
By duration:
- Short-term: two to three weeks with an intensive study schedule. Such IELTS courses abroad are suitable for those foreigners who already have a good basic level of English, who do not need an explanation of the basics.
- Medium duration: from a month to two, during which classes are evenly distributed. In this type of IELTS course, a basic knowledge of English is also welcome, since the main emphasis of training is on working on specific topics and tasks, and not on analyzing the language from scratch.
- Long-term: from six months to a year, during which time foreigners can improve their language skills 1 or 2 levels up. A long period of study allows you to cover all the language features and nuances of the exam itself. Classes are held in a smooth mode, without unnecessary haste and excessive load; Foreigners can delve into individual topics and tasks, take several trial tests.
By the format of training:
- Group: IELTS course providers abroad can recruit both small groups and large classes. It is believed that classes in mini-classes are more effective.
- Personal: such IELTS courses are held one-on-one with a teacher, thanks to which a foreigner can receive a study plan in accordance with his request.
- Combined: combine both group and personal lessons.
