School education in Austria in public institutions starts at the age of six, but in some cases a child can go to school at the age of five, if his level of development and preparation for school is ahead of his age.

For the first nine years of school, the child receives basic education, after completing nine grades, the student completes the basic level and moves on to narrow-profile education.

It is possible to obtain a secondary educational level both in private schools and in public schools in Austria. For foreign students, both options of schools provide only paid educational services, but some public schools have a minimum number of state-funded places for foreign students (as a rule, holders of a residence permit).
