What is DELF?
The abbreviation is Diplome d'études en langue Française. The DELF is an international French language test that was created by the French Ministry of Education. The main objective of the DELF exam is to assess a foreigner's French language skills in two aspects: written and speaking. The creators determined the score of the DELF exam within the framework of the international scale for assessing knowledge of a foreign language: the maximum score for the exam is 100, the threshold is 50.
The DELF exam French for foreigners is evaluated on four levels of difficulty:
- DELF A1,
- DELF A2,
- DELF B1,
- DELF B2.
The DELF exam procedure itself is also divided into 4 stages:
- listening comprehension,
- reading
- letter
- Speaking.
The diploma after passing the DELF exam is valid indefinitely, so it is enough for a foreigner to take the DELF once in order to use it for their own purposes.
Take the DELF French exam to:
- apply to a French-speaking university and school,
- get a job in a French company,
- obtain a residence permit in France.
Most often, in order to achieve any of these goals, a foreigner needs to provide a diploma confirming a level of at least B2, sometimes the required level may be lower. The DELF French exam tests those foreigners who have at least basic knowledge, but it is better to have an intermediate level or higher. Usually, foreigners can reach this level in 2-3 years of learning French.

Why is it better to take DELF courses abroad?
You can also decide on the DELF exam options in Russian language schools, with private tutors or on your own, but such preparation can be longer and less productive than studying at foreign DELF courses, where the French language is studied in conditions of full immersion in the environment of native speakers. In this case, even if the foreigner initially had a low level of French for the DELF, they will be able to quickly fill their educational gaps.
Studying with native French speakers in DELF courses allows foreigners to stay up to date with current changes in both the language itself and the exam. Students can get more exclusive information from French teachers than foreign teachers and lecturers give. Native French speakers can give a foreigner life hacks for better assimilation and understanding of the material, talk about complex language constructions that will significantly increase the level of knowledge of students, give them confidence in their knowledge.
What are the types of DELF courses abroad?
- General: Smooth study of the material in modules that cover the main tasks of the DELF exam and difficult topics. Usually, such courses last from a month to six months or more.
- Intensive: studying the material in a short time with an increased level of workload, in which the student does not have time to deal with basic knowledge of French. Such courses are suitable only for those foreigners who have a confident language base. Usually, such courses last 2-3 weeks.
- For specific levels: these DELF French courses are analysed in the context of a specific exam level, without going into generalizations or touching on other options.
- Preparatory with a cultural program: such training includes not only language classes, but also excursions for foreigners, events, visits to museums, etc.
- Online classes: virtual courses that can be taken from anywhere in the world (but in this case, immersion in the language environment will be incomplete).
How is the DELF different from other international language tests?
The main difference between the DELF exam and other language tests is that here foreigners are initially tested for a specific level of knowledge of French. To do this, before the start of the main DELF exam, they take a mock test, the results of which will show what level of diploma a foreigner can count on in the future, that is, in the DELF exam itself, the tasks will correspond to a specific level of knowledge - no less and no more.
Where can you take DELF courses abroad in French for foreigners in 2025?
It is best to prepare for the DELF exam in French in countries such as:
- France
- Canada,
- Belgium,
- Switzerland.
In these countries, French courses for DELF are conducted by local language centers and schools, universities, and business companies. Some of them may give preference to those applicants or applicants who, after confirming their level of French on the DELF, will come to enroll or find a job with them.

What are DELF courses for?
- For high-quality preparation for the content of tasks. In DELF courses, the French language is analyzed in as much detail as possible in the context of the exam: teachers, together with students, analyze the main tasks for different levels, the topics that are covered there, analyze difficult questions and common mistakes of examinees. To attend classes, a foreigner should ideally already have a basic level of French proficiency – or zero, if the DELF exam preparation course includes the initial study of the language as well (but most often the basic study of French is not included in the DELF courses).
- For a better understanding of the exam procedure. To assess the format of the DELF exam itself, DELF course organizers can implement a mock test in all of its canons. When foreigners know what awaits them, it is easier for them to pass the real DELF French language proficiency exam.
- To receive prompt and high-quality feedback from experienced teachers. Studying on their own or through video lectures, foreigners cannot fully assess their progress, whether there is any at all. Classes in DELF courses allow students to communicate with teachers, ask them questions, get an intermediate assessment of their academic performance, learn about the strengths and weaknesses of their French language skills.
- For learning with the ability to discuss the process with other students. Self-study can create the illusion that only one student faces difficulties and problems, but communication with a team that has similar goals helps to psychologically unload and understand that a foreigner is not alone on the educational path.
