Ashford University is based on the experience of two universities: TeleUniversity, an online university opened in 1999, and Franciscan Prairie University, founded in 1918. In 2005, the proprietary TeleUniversity purchased the Franciscan University campus in Clinton, Arizona.
The former online university has received a full-time student base and a new name is Ashford University. The university administration was able to use the academic potential of the previous owners, but most of the students studied on remote programs.
In 2016, the university completely switched to online education and sold the campus. Now its headquarters is in San Diego, California.
