Imagine: 2024, and students in Germany are facing a real challenge – the housing market has simply collapsed by as much as 20%! Student rent has become the number one headache.
If you think that finding housing in Germany is not difficult, we are afraid to worry you, the latest figures from the MLP Studentenwohnreport are disappointing: rental prices have skyrocketed. Berlin, which usually attracts young people from all over the world, has become quite expensive: rents jumped by 9.4%! Also the national average is 5.4%. So here you have affordable housing.
Munich generally is a leader in terms of expensiveness in the country. Imagine – $865 a month for a roof over your head, that's the average! This is a serious hole in the student budget, given that scholarships do not always cover these expenses, and not everyone receives them. The conclusion suggests itself: we need to build new housing, right?
How the issue is resolved
Real estate expert Michael Voigtländer from IW believes that it is the urgent construction of new student dormitories that could help. After all, it turned out that getting a place in a dormitory is practically a lottery. Take, for example, Münster, where the queue stretched to 3,600 people.
Universities go to great lengths to somehow alleviate the lot of first-year students, even gyms are turning into temporary housing. Of course, this is only a temporary measure, but what are the alternatives? Some student organizations, such as in Freiburg, advise looking for accommodation away from the city - however, few people want to spend two hours every day on the road.
But if you dream of studying in Germany, don't despair! Just think about housing in advance: look for it in advance, cooperate with other students, and then no crisis will interfere with your plan. German universities are still an attractive option, although they now require a little more planning time. Everything is in your hands!
