University of Leoben

The University of Leoben (abbreviated as MUL ) or Montanuniversität Leoben is an educational institution of the state type that has been active in scientific and academic activities since the beginning of 1840 in Austria. Currently, the University MUL has its student campus in the city of Leoben.

Montanuniversität Leoben leads the European university alliance EURECA-PRO. Its partners are TU Bergakademie Freiberg, the Technical University of Crete, the University of León, the Silesian University of Technology, the University of Petroșani, Hochschule Mittweida, Hasselt University, and the University of Lorraine.

University staff established the Sustainable Development Panel, a group working to integrate sustainability into teaching and research.

Students learn in small groups and begin tackling real industrial and social challenges early in their studies. The university works closely with businesses in its teaching.

Students can change their field of study during the shared first year. At the end of their master's program, they complete an independent research project.

The Welcome Weeks orientation program helps new students understand how their studies are organized, learn to use university systems, and get to know one another. Activities include sessions on campus, online events, and materials students can work through at their own pace. The introductory Moodle course 641.041 MUL. An Essential Starter Guide covers student life and the study center. It is available to enrolled students, who earn 2 ECTS credits for completing the entire course.

MUonline is the central system for managing academic activities. The university uses recorded classes, webinars, and livestreams to support remote participation. Webinars mainly use Cisco Webex and Zoom. The Study Support Center helps students organize their studies, handles academic and exam administration and recognition of prior learning, and organizes peer teaching. Students can expand their professional networks at the Teconomy career fair.

The university's academic units include a chair of iron and steel metallurgy and a chair of waste processing and waste management.

Metallurgy studies cover the sustainable production, processing, and development of metals.

The university presents the Wissenschaftspreis für Montanistinnen, a research award, annually to women researchers and students for outstanding achievements. Its research and innovation unit works with ZAT to support startups and companies based on university research.

• The university's TripleN initiative brings together environmental, economic, and social aspects of sustainability,
• The university publishes TripleN, a magazine about research and sustainability. Its paper, ink, and format are chosen to conserve resources,
• Each year, first-year students receive their enrollment certificates with a handshake,
• The Ledersprung student celebration takes place in early December, around the feast of St. Barbara.

The university sports institute, USI, offers classes in a range of sports:

• American football in partnership with Upper Styrian Rhinos,
• Badminton covering basic strokes, footwork, and tactics for singles and doubles. Beginners are welcome,
• Basketball in partnership with HEAT ARROW, including classes open to beginners,
• Water exercise for participants of different ages,
• Bouldering, or climbing at low heights. The introductory course covers basic movements, while the advanced class teaches specialized techniques,
• Dance, including slow and Viennese waltz, tango, foxtrot, cha-cha-cha, and boogie-woogie. A separate course combines fitness and dance, with no prior experience required,
• Ice hockey covering skating, stickhandling, team plays, and rules. Participants need basic skating skills and their own hockey skates. They may have the opportunity to play for GOLDEN MINERS.

USI rents out kayaks, cross-country ski equipment, gravel bikes, via ferrata gear, snowshoes, and avalanche rescue equipment.

The university has a wind orchestra, Bergkapelle Leoben-Seegraben, and a choir. A group of 13 students founded the Montan Factory Racing project in 2022.

This is a higher educational institution in Austria, which is listed in the TOP-20 best in the country. 

The university has more than 100 laboratories. Its facilities include the Erzherzog Johann Tract. High-performance computing clusters are available for computationally intensive tasks.

The information technology service maintains wired and wireless networks and internet access for the university and connected student residences.
