Description of University of East London (UEL)

  • Location: London, England,
  • Year of foundation: 1898,
  • Number of students: about 22,500,
  • Language of instruction: English,
  • Type of study: mixed.

The University of East London (UEL) is a multidisciplinary public university with an autonomous campus in London, which distinguishes it from many higher education institutions in the capital of England.

In 1892, a decree was issued on the beginning of the construction of a technical institution that could provide high-quality education to local residents. A few years later, in 1898, the Technical Institute opened its doors and faithfully served the community. In 1970, the institute merged with several colleges, as the demand for technical education has grown over the years — then the Northeast London Polytechnic Institute was founded with several campuses. It was only in 1992 that the institution received the title of university, the current name, becoming one of the "universities of modern times". Today, UEL has an excellent reputation at the national and international levels, annually attracting hundreds of foreign students to the educational grounds.

The University of East London offers UK higher education programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and admission preparation courses for international students. UEL campuses offer extensive opportunities not only for obtaining professional knowledge and skills, but also for developing individual abilities, talents, and personality traits. The teaching staff, represented by qualified specialists from various fields, provides academic and extracurricular support, providing additional classes in subjects, face-to-face meetings on curriculum adjustments, and other services. The staff takes comprehensive care of each UEL pupil, being close at all stages of training: from obtaining a visa to finding a place for employment.

The UEL consists of five specialized faculties:

  • Architecture, Computing, Engineering,
  • Arts, Creative Industries,
  • Childhood, social care,
  • Healthcare, Sports, Life Sciences,
  • Business, law.

There are also research institutes at the university.

Things to know about

The Olympic Games were held in London from July 27 to August 17, 2012, and the UEL played an important role in them. The Docklands campus, including SportsDock, provided accommodation, sports facilities for Team USA, which included 200m gold medalist Allison Felix and basketball legend LeBron James. The campus was also home to the British national team's medical team, which was instrumental in ensuring that British athletes performed optimally during the Games. The team included UEL alumna Gemma Gibbons, who won a silver medal in judo in the 70 kg category.

Accommodation, meals, prices

UEL has several comfortable residences located in the educational areas. Residential buildings (East and West Halls) offer students two types of accommodation: standard and premium class. You can book a room for the time required for the student: from one summer month to a full calendar year, including summer holidays.

The difference between premium and standard rooms is determined by recent renovation - the premium rooms have updated household appliances, freshly painted walls and other innovations. At the same time, both types of rooms apply to all types of living spaces — the residences offer single bedrooms with private bathrooms, studios, separate and shared apartments for four people. Residents of the residences have fully furnished kitchens equipped with the necessary equipment for storage and cooking, living rooms with board games and TV, laundries, gyms.

Catering services at the university are provided by the Aramark agency. A wide range of locally sourced dishes, a balanced menu, and vegan and vegetarian recipes can all be found in several dining halls on the Docklands and Stratford campuses.
