The Polytechnic University of Madrid is named for the city in which it is located. Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) is the highest state educational institution in Spain. The beginning of academic activity was laid down in 1971.

The Polytechnic University of Madrid has strong positions in the national academic universities in Madrid rating. This is evidenced by the constant finding of a university in the top twenty best in Spain.

Such popularity among the entrants is due to the presence of competitive areas, among which the most prestigious is the Faculty for the study of engineering. This is confirmed by 131 lines of the rating, compiled according to expert estimates of specialists in this field.

The university offers free massive open online courses (MOOCs) on the UPM En Abierto platform, with a certificate of completion issued upon finishing the course.

Starting from the 2023/2024 academic year, UPM offers Programas Académicos con Recorrido Sucesivo — a sequential progression through a bachelor's program (Grado) and its associated master's program (Máster) as a single, complete cycle of study.

University professor Claudio Feijoo was honored with the Premio Casa Asia 2026 award in the "Economy and Business" category.

Students of the Higher Technical School of Computer Engineering (ETSIINF) became finalists of the international UPM-KAIST innovation and design competition dedicated to the theme of active longevity and artificial intelligence, with the project "Memory at home". Other students of the same school were awarded the Premios Caja de Ingenieros – UPM for the best academic performance in the first year and across the entire bachelor's degree in the 2024/2025 academic year.

In 2011, after a complete upgrade, the university's Magerit supercomputer took first place in Spain simultaneously in the TOP500 and GREEN500 rankings.

• The Archivo Digital UPM electronic repository retrospectively assigned DOIs to 3,350 doctoral dissertations defended at the university before 2016,
• The solemn opening of the 2026/27 academic year began with the inaugural lecture "New Horizons in Sound Technology," delivered by Professor Efrén Fernández Grande from the Higher Technical School of Engineering and Telecommunications Systems at UPM.

The DA-UPM student representation is part of the Coordinadora de Representantes de Estudiantes de Universidades Públicas — a national association bringing together more than 40 universities and representing over 1,000,000 students.

• The Montegancedo Technology Campus received Campus de Excelencia Internacional (Campus of International Excellence) status from the Spanish Ministry of Education in 2010,
• An agreement with Universidad de Valladolid on mutual recognition of elective courses at the Segovia campus makes it possible to credit free-choice credits at both universities,
• The university hosts researchers under an agreement with the China Scholarship Council for participation in research activities,
• The university's alumni network numbers more than 100,000 people working across various sectors around the world,
• Students have access to international mobility programs including Erasmus+, ATHENS, Magalhães, and programs for Asia, North America, Latin America, Global E3, and Vulcanus.

UPM is an educational institution that is quite large in size. At the same time, about 40,000 students study at the university. Admission documents for admission is not only from Spanish nationals, but also from foreigners (one in ten students is a foreign national). This once again confirms the prestige of the Polytechnic University of Madrid. For such a large number of students, an appropriate teaching staff is required. The number of full-time specialists who help young people to acquire the necessary amount of knowledge reaches 2,600 units. The exchange opportunities for students at this university are quite large. All the existing opportunities on this issue can be found in social networks tied to the institution.

All students have the opportunity to practice their favorite sport in several sports complexes. To obtain knowledge and replenish erudition, students are provided with an excellent academic library. Separately it is worth noting the permanent membership among such associations as EUA, CESAER and OCW.

Enrollment of new students at UPM traditionally takes place in two stages — in early summer and additionally in early fall, for those who did not manage to sign up right away. Students continuing their undergraduate studies and all master's students enroll during a separate summer period.

To begin with, it is required to provide the admission committee with a document on basic education, but the success of enrollment directly depends on the points scored in the examination tests. The annual academic process is divided here two academic semesters.
