Tonbridge School is a famous British boarding school for boys. Its founder is Andrew Judd. Tonbridge School has a membership in the Eton Group. The school belongs to the Association of the 12 most prestigious boarding houses in Britain.

The institution is famous for outstanding academic results of its students. The school is also famous for own symphony orchestra. 

The institution has a high GCSE and A-level rating among private independent boarding schools in England. It ranks 11th and 29th in the TOP-50, respectively.

Entry conditions

In a prestigious school, recruitment is carried out on a competitive basis. Foreign students need a characterization from the school, an extract from the report card or a certificate of graduation from 9 classes, an ideal knowledge of English (level B2).

The program is structured progressively: in Year 9 (the Novi stage) it covers a broad range of subjects and aims to maximize learning while maintaining engagement, while in the upper years students personalize it by choosing subjects according to their interests.

The lesson format combines explanation of material, discussions, and independent work.

The school has built a strong support network: the 2024 inspection noted that it reduces student stress, strengthens emotional resilience, and helps students focus on their studies. The house system is responsible for the boys' wellbeing, and the chaplain is always available to speak with a student about faith and personal matters.

The academic program consists of three stages:

• Year 9 — the Novi stage: a broad program aimed at maximizing learning while maintaining engagement and personal development,
• The GCSE program,
• Sixth Form (Years 11–12) — students build their own program by choosing A-Level subjects and elective courses.

Additional courses are available to senior students:

• An Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) on a chosen topic, ranging from climate change to bioethics,
• Language qualifications in French, German, or Spanish taken alongside the main school curriculum,
• A short mathematics course (AS) for students not taking the full A-Level,

In summer, the school runs the IMPACT Summer program — two-week thematic blocks in which students choose an academic track led by specialist teachers, a personal development workshop, and hands-on sessions. The program includes:

The boys are accommodated at the school on a full board basis. There are 7 dormitories on the campus, designed for 60 people each. The residences have dining rooms, kitchens, staff.

Students 1 - 5 years old  are accommodated in 2-3-bed rooms with private facilities. 6 years old boys live in separate apartments, including a bedroom and study. In general, every dormitory has a recreation room, a sports infrastructure.

Students meals are organized by residences. Joint dinners and barbeques are arranged on weekends, so that students can communicate in an informal setting. Food is prepared in the kitchens of residences by professional chefs. Healthy eating in the Tonbridge School is marked by a special award

Traditionally, for British boarding schools, an extracurricular program at the Tonbridge School is divided into 3 blocks. Entertainment provides for the participation of students in various activities. The boys are offered interesting excursions around the city, to London, the university centers of England. Local entertainment is also organized for students: concerts, quizzes, show programs, sports inside and competitions between schools.

There are a lot of clubs in the school. International students are also given the opportunity to visit clubs of interest. Boys can develop creative abilities, study optional subjects of interest to them.

The sports program is no less diverse. Infrastructural possibilities of the educational institution make it possible to engage in volleyball, tennis, water polo, swimming, squash, shooting, sailing, judo, hockey, golf, football, pentathlon, fencing, cricket, rock climbing, basketball, badminton, athletics. Getting to know the school begins with a campus visit: families are advised to register their son when he is in 5th grade (at age 10). The school regularly holds open meetings with the admissions team and headmaster, along with tours led by current students.

One graduate of 2026 was admitted to the University of Oxford (New College, Chemistry). During his studies, he participated in olympiads and competitions in chemistry, physics, mathematics, and astrophysics.

Requirements:

• Admission to Year 9 (13+): candidates with a preliminary place offer sit preliminary exams in March of Year 7,
• Admission to Year 10 (14+): the school requests a confidential reference from the candidate's current school, and successful applicants are invited to an online interview,
• Admission to Year 12 (16+): initial assessment at an accredited center or based on a school report. If academically high grades are predicted, including in final exams, the candidate sits exams in chosen subjects and an English language exam. Based on the results, an online interview with a subject teacher may follow.

Financial support is a prominent part of school life: total discounts through scholarships and awards reach nearly £2.5 million per year. By 2028, the school plans to double the number of recipients — approximately one in eight pupils will receive support.

Scholarships on entry to Year 9 are available for academic achievement, art, design and engineering, drama, music, and sport. Conditions:

• By the time of the Year 8 examination, the candidate must already hold an unconditional offer of a place for 2027,
• Applications may be submitted for several scholarships simultaneously,
• Scholars who do not require financial assistance receive a one-off prize of £2,000 from the school.

The Junior Foundation Award provides support on entry to Year 6 for talented boys (typically from state primary schools): up to 10 awards are granted annually following a means assessment, and an award may cover up to 100% of tuition fees. Currently, more than 70 pupils receive significant fee reductions.
The award is open to both boarders and day pupils, but is restricted to those residing in the United Kingdom. The assessment takes into account not only income but also assets, necessary expenses, and family commitments.

In the senior school, a separate scholarship programme exists for academic, musical, and sporting achievement. Scholarships may be combined with targeted financial assistance. Honorary Lower Sixth academic scholarships carrying a £100 prize are awarded for outstanding public examination results.

Other forms of funding:
