English Language Course

The English Language Institute (ELI) at SHU offers high-quality English language instruction to international learners. As one of the few CEA-accredited Intensive English programs in the state of Connecticut, the ESL course maintains high standards to promote student achievement by providing up to 20 hours of in-person, evening, and online instruction.
The basis of the curriculum is the basic skills necessary for comfortable learning: reading, writing, speaking, listening comprehension. With the help of classroom communication, project work, interactive classes, students quickly assimilate knowledge and practice it more often in a supportive environment.
Each ESL teacher has a master's degree in TESOL, has significant experience in this field. Teachers strive for excellence in teaching, providing all the necessary conditions for the speedy adaptation of foreign students to American culture.
Courses are designed for students aged 15 and over and are offered at a variety of proficiency levels, from beginner to advanced. Eight weeks are allocated for mastering each level. The average class size is 10-15 students, allowing teachers to give individual attention to each student.

There are 15 residential complexes on the SHU campus, each of which offers different types of rooms with diverse comfort levels. All first-year students must choose one of the residences for their first year of study, which can be extended for subsequent years or take the opportunity to move to a more comfortable complex at the university or beyond. The residences have fully furnished single, double, triple or quadruple rooms with high-speed Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are often shared and located on the floor, as well as living rooms, kitchen areas, classrooms for self-study and events, and laundries. All residential buildings are under 24-hour security, access to them is organized using special personal cards. Graduate students live in apartments or townhouses. These rooms offer single bedrooms, access to a shared kitchen, bathroom, and living room for two or four people; in rare cases, all amenities can be customized, but there are very few such rooms on campus.
There are various cafeterias, restaurants, and dining halls on campus, each offering a diverse menu ranging from international cuisine to dietary, vegetarian, and vegan recipes. SHU has several academic sites in Fairfield, as well as campuses in Stamford and Griswold, Connecticut, and an academic site in Dingle, Ireland.
