The Institute was founded in 1871 as the Society of Telegraph Engineers, in 2006 underwent changes, becoming a modern version of the IET.

The Institute of Engineering & Technology The IET has offices around the world – in China, Hong Kong, India and the USA. Most of the hard-working team of employees in the UK can be found thirty miles north of London, in futures place, Stevenage.

The institution has several different offers for its pupils, namely membership and camaraderie. There are several categories of membership in the IET, some of which have post-nominals:

This category is open to professional engineers (MIET) and technicians (TIET) with relevant qualifications and participation in areas relevant to the interests of the Institution

Achievement Awards

IET Achievement Awards exist to recognize talents in engineering and technology with a wide range of categories to recognize people who have had a real impact in their industry.

General Prize Scholarships

  • Four prizes of £2500 each
  • Two prizes of £5000 each
  • One prize of £10,000.

These prizes are awarded on a competitive basis – the organization conducts interviews with candidates included in the preliminary list, and after the institution selects the winners, the prizes are awarded to them at the prestigious achievement award ceremony.

A. F. Harvey Award for Engineering Research

The most valuable prize pool, the A.F. Harvey Award, awards an annual research prize of £350,000 to researchers working in the fields of radar and microwave radiation, lasers and optoelectronics or medical technology.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

When applying to join a organisation as a member, you will need to show that you have the following qualifications and experience. Ideally, you will have:

  • Pass/Ordinary/Honours Bachelor's Degree in a relevant subject (BSc, BTech, BEng (Hons), MEng, MSc, PhD)
  • Postgraduate Diploma, Professional Qualification or Certification
  • Other honours degrees, higher degrees in a relevant subject such as physics or mathematics
  • Work experience (from two to 12 years) in this field.
