Since its founding in 1922, Indian Mountain School (IMS) has encouraged its students to pay great attention to social service: the values of honesty, compassion, and respect determine the goals of teaching and schooling. The school offers permanent residence or full-time education for students from 4 to 14 years. Academic education is supported by numerous elective courses aimed at the comprehensive development of students. Programs for pupils living in a boarding school include a variety of leisure activities, family-style dinners, celebrations, and a warm and supportive school culture.
The school uses a technological approach to learning, so that students can actively interact with the outside world, the achievements of modern science. Outdoor events have been an integral part of student life since the opening of the institution due to its excellent location: mountainous terrain, forests, clean air. Adventure Education teaches students to interact with nature, to appreciate and protect it.
About 250 students take the school annually: about 100 of them are boarders of 5–9 grades, representing 10 US states and more than a dozen international countries.

- IMS regularly innovates to better prepare students, to identify their strengths. The school offers a complex, balanced education, intensive participation, individualized attention. An important task of the school is to teach students the skills necessary to live and work with other people in the future. The development of empathy for communication and collaboration in an increasingly diverse and connected world is one of the aspects of learning in IMS. Students form their own communication style, develop leadership skills, reveal strengths and talents.
- The school recognizes ninth grade education as a unique time in the development of students: adolescents are extremely socially vulnerable, but they are learning. Ninth grade at IMS provides them with a safe environment in which they can succeed thanks to an outstanding academic program. Pupils work with iPad platforms, use collaboration technologies - Google Docs, cool blogs, etc.
- Art is an integral part of each student’s school curriculum. The Department of Art aims to explore with students new themes, the development of their own creative hobbies. Strong, individualized programs in the field of cinema, drama, studio art, music help to develop each student's hobby to the level of useful skill and even a future profession.
- The IMS track and field program reflects school traditions of cooperation and sportsmanship.
