Hochshule Mannheim was founded in 1989 as a private engineering school, the money for its creation was allocated by the city administration. In 1971, the school received the status of a higher educational institution and became the University of Applied Sciences. In 1995, the College of Design joined the university, and in 2006, the School of Social Affairs. Hochshule Mannheim was one of the first universities in Germany to receive education in biotechnology.
