Hilden Grange School — a private independent school for children aged 3 to 13. It is considered one of the leading preparatory schools in Kent: its pupils not only successfully pass entrance exams to senior classes, but also receive scholarships to study at the best secondary schools.

Information Technology

Hilden Grange School offers an engaging computing programme for pupils from Year 1 to Year 8. It is based on the Teach Computing curriculum from the National Centre for Computing Education, helps children develop skills for life in the digital world and prepares them for future careers, and covers 3 areas:

In the lower years, children work on iPad tablets, learn internet safety rules, develop responsible use of devices and personal data management, are introduced to the basics of programming through block diagrams, create multimedia projects, process data, and work with texts. From Year 5, pupils move to Microsoft Surface devices, which gives them access to more advanced software. Children deepen their programming knowledge using Scratch, Python, and web development tools, study computer networks, algorithms, and data representation, and develop digital literacy skills: learning to evaluate online sources, work in cloud environments, and create presentations and spreadsheets.

Mathematics

In the prep school, pupils are divided into 3 sets for mathematics; small classes help every child reach their potential. Lessons are taught by specialist teachers. At the end of the summer term, an exciting «Mathematics Faculty Race» takes place.

Geography and Natural Sciences

Geography is introduced from Year 3, covering both physical and human geography. Pupils explore a range of topics: from weather and climate to tectonic activity, geomorphology, economic and sustainable development. Lessons make use of atlases, maps, and textbooks, and children are encouraged to conduct independent research using ICT. Fieldwork is an important part of learning. Pupils enjoy studying nature first-hand: they carry out investigations both locally and further afield, for example in Iceland. In Years 7–8, pupils explore current topics in greater depth: for instance, one project takes place at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, where children learn to collect and analyse primary data.

History topics are distributed across year groups:

• Years 3 to 6: Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, the Tudor and Stuart periods, the Victorian era, the Second World War.
• Years 7–8: global conflicts and wars, events and historical figures from different eras.

Pupils in Years 3–4 study biblical stories from the Old and New Testaments, drawing parallels with everyday life. In Year 3, the study of Hinduism is added, and in Year 4 — Buddhism. The programme is built on an enquiry-based approach.

In Years 7–8 there is a «Theology, Philosophy and Religion» course: it prepares pupils for entrance examinations and scholarship selection. They study aspects of the Bible and God's relationship with the world; in Year 7 they are introduced to Judaism, visiting a synagogue in Bromley and learning about the religion in a local context. Additionally, the basics of philosophy are studied: ethics, the ability to articulate ideas clearly, and the biographies and teachings of well-known philosophers.

Languages

Since 2017, the prep school has taught not only French but also Spanish — the opportunity to study two Romance languages has proved very popular. Even in the nursery group, children use different languages for simple greetings and answers to questions; French is introduced in the first two years through games and songs. In the prep school, the emphasis remains on communication: children act out scenes, work in pairs, and expand their vocabulary on topics from everyday life (family, friends, home, school, food, shopping).

Latin is introduced in Year 7. Pupils are taught to see the value of the subject and to understand how it supports other areas of learning. Initially, children learn basic vocabulary and look for Latin roots in English and other languages — and through games and practical tasks, they notice how knowledge of Latin improves spelling, grammar, and vocabulary. The school helps dispel the myth of Latin as a «dead» language: pupils can clearly see that it lives on in other languages.

Art, Design, Crafts

All pupils study art and design technology under the guidance of specialist teachers, with lessons held in a purpose-equipped room. The emphasis is on enjoyment of the creative process and the development of technical skills. Children are introduced to cultural context and art history; the room is fully equipped for this: clay, paints, mixed-media materials, and computer design programmes.

In music lessons, the emphasis is on singing, rhythm, and playing percussion instruments. Teaching is based on the Kodály and Dalcroze methodologies.

The subject Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education is taught by class teachers in dedicated weekly lessons. It is based on the Jigsaw PSHEE programme.

Forest School and Extracurricular Activities

Once a term, children spend a full day at «Forest School»: a specialist outdoor education programme led by a qualified practitioner. What «Forest School» provides:

Admission to Hilden Grange School takes place in 6 stages:

1. Initial contact. At this stage, you need to send an inquiry to the school, check whether places are available, and you can visit the campus for an introductory tour.

3. Introductory session or assessment. The child attends a trial lesson or a full day; sometimes at this stage testing is conducted to better understand the student's level of knowledge and individual characteristics.
4. Receiving an offer. If the candidate has successfully completed the previous stages, the school sends them an offer — an official offer of admission.
5. Confirming the place: to secure the student's place, a deposit must be paid and the required documents provided.
