Starting from the 2026/27 academic year, the ban on the use of smartphones and other connected devices will extend to French upper secondary schools (Lycée). Similar restrictions had previously been introduced in kindergartens, primary schools, and middle schools starting in 2018.
Different phone storage methods may be used — each educational institution determines them independently: individual lockers, a shared box in the classroom, individual cases (which can only be opened after classes end), etc. Rule violators may have their device confiscated or face another disciplinary statement.
Exceptions to the rules are also determined by each school individually, with one exception — for medical reasons (for example, if a student has a disability or chronic illness and constant connectivity is necessary for monitoring).
A separate category consists of Lycées that, in addition to middle and upper school classes, also offer higher education courses: this applies, in particular, to section de technicien supérieur and classe préparatoire aux grandes écoles. Rules for students at these stages will be established separately.
