Vienna University of Economics and Business

Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien or the Vienna University of Economics and Business (abbreviated as WU) is a state-level educational institution in Austria that has been active in scientific activities since the distant 1898. University students have at their disposal a small university campus in Vienna with a hostel and sports infrastructure.

Over the past years, the institution has consistently been among the TOP 20 best of the best Austrian universities.

WU offers individual advising and workshops to help students get started. In September 2026, the university held Welcome Days, a series of orientation events for approximately 3700 new students. Tutors worked with small groups of first-year students and answered questions about university life.

Students beginning their studies in economics and social sciences take Betriebswirtschaft und digitale Ökonomie, an introductory course on business administration and the digital economy. It introduces them to fundamental economic questions.

Students use LEARN as a learning and information platform. The myWU app gives them smartphone access to schedules, courses, grades, registration information, and university information services. LearnPublic offers open educational resources on business and related subjects.

The WU Library's publicly accessible Fit4Research online learning program covers library use, information search techniques, and reference management. WU's International Office advises and supports students planning to study abroad.

WU master's programs earned the following positions in the QS Business Master’s Rankings 2027:

• Supply Chain Management: 5th out of 142 programs,
• Marketing: 13th out of 213 programs,
• Strategy, Innovation and Management Control: 16th out of 256 programs,
• Quantitative Finance: 29th out of 285 programs,
• Digital Economy: 26th out of 234 programs.

The university achieved the following results in the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects:

• Business Administration: 76–100 worldwide and 1st among five Austrian universities,
• Economics: 101–150 worldwide and 1st among four Austrian universities,
• Finance: 101–150 worldwide. WU was the only Austrian university represented,
• Management: 201–300 worldwide. WU ranked in the 1–3 range among five Austrian universities.

At the Student Club Messe fair, new students learned about WU student initiatives and opportunities to get involved.

Participants in WU NextGenBuddy support children and teenagers in their studies and social development. The program offers three options:

• Lernbuddy (academic support),
• Musikbuddy (music),
• Sportbuddy (sports).

Students earn 3 ECTS credits per semester for participating in NextGenBuddy. After two semesters, they receive WU's Social Skills certificate.

We are talking about a large educational institution, where about 23,000 students take a course each year. The faculty of the university is about 1900 teachers of the highest category. Students can also apply and take part in the program for the exchange of students between universities if they wish. 

University infrastructure

All students have access to a large library, a place in the hostel. The university in Vienna is on the list of members of elite scientific communities and associations.

All WU students must pay membership dues of 26.20 euros to the Austrian National Union of Students (ÖH). This requirement also applies to those enrolled in non-degree programs and anyone exempt from tuition.

Cost of education

WU's International Office advises students on funding for study-related activities abroad.

Students applying for a tuition waiver must provide original supporting documents. Documents in foreign languages must meet translation and legalization requirements. If an application is submitted late or valid grounds for a waiver arise later in the semester, tuition must be paid first. Students can then request reimbursement, with supporting documents, within the applicable deadlines.
