VLGAFC was founded on June 19, 1970 as the Velikiye Luki branch of the Leningrad State Institute of Physical Culture named after P.F. Lesgaft. From 1977 to 1992, the university was a branch of the Moscow State Institute of Physical Culture.

Scientific achievements
On the instructions of the Ministry of Sports of Russia, the VLGAFC conducted research on the topic "Improving the technical and functional preparedness of athletes on the basis of artificially created interaction with the external training environment (for example, archery and pistol)". The purpose of the work was to study the possibility of improving the effectiveness of technical and functional training of athletes of shooting sports on the basis of artificial optimization of their interaction with external training environment. The results of the work formed the basis of methodological recommendations that are implemented in the training process of the Archery Federation of the Pskov Region, in the work of the MBUDO CYSS No. 3 in Velikiye Luki (bullet shooting and archery departments) and in the educational process of the FSBEI HE "VLGAFK". The results of the study can be used by athletes and coaches of sports teams of Russia and regions of shooting sports, as well as specialists and employees of sports laboratories. The proposed methods and approaches to the interpretation of the data obtained can be included in the current or staged control of the preparedness of athletes.
Of great importance in the research activities of the VLGAFC is attached to the improvement of innovative swimming training programs for people of different ages and genders, including those with health disorders.

The academic year begins on September 1 and is divided into two semesters, each ending with a test and examination session in accordance with the curriculum of the corresponding educational program.
