Description of Ural Federal University (UrFU)

Higher education of excellent quality, as well as with the issuance of state diplomas can be obtained at the Ural Federal University (Ural Federal University). Ural Federal University was formed by the merger of the Yeltsin Ural State Technical University and the Gorky Ural State University, the beginning of which academic activity dates back to 1920. In the Ural region, it is the oldest institution of higher education, besides being one of the largest in the whole Russian Federation.

Yeltsin Ural Federal University (UrFU) is a prestigious educational institution, one of the best in the Urals and Russia, and also one of the largest. It issues state-standard diplomas and offers programs at all levels of higher education in several dozen specialties. UrFU was formed as a result of the merger of Yeltsin Ural State Technical University and Gorky Ural State University (the latter was founded in 1920). Today it bears the name of the first President of the Russian Federation, Boris Nikolaevich Yeltsin.

In total, UrFU comprises 18 dormitories, with places primarily allocated to foreign and out-of-town students (total capacity – up to 8000 people). Facilities and equipment at Ural Federal University (UrFU)

The university is well-equipped for training a large number of students. All classrooms are bright and have the necessary equipment and technology: PCs and related peripherals, audio systems, projectors, interactive whiteboards; there is also language lab equipment. Admission dates and extra charges

The academic year is traditionally divided into two semesters for Russian universities: 

  • Autumn (September-December);
  • Spring (January-June). 

At the end of each of the two semesters, an examination session is held, followed by holidays: winter (short, in January) and summer (June-August).

Enrolment process

Document acceptance begins approximately in mid-June — an applicant can submit a package of documents in person, through Gosuslugi (State Services), by mail, through the Personal Account (the UrFU online structure for applicants), using the "Enter University Online" service. 

List of documents required for admission (basic, may be supplemented depending on the specialty and personal circumstances of the applicant):

  • Application for admission to UrFI,
  • Identity document and citizenship document (passport),
  • Document in a standard format confirming completed education (certificate and/or diploma),
  • SNILS,
  • Photograph (3x4 cm) in printed or electronic form,
  • Unified State Exam results.

Upon successful completion of the competition for a place, an agreement on the provision of educational services is concluded.

A total of almost 7,000 people study at UrFU, and the number of graduates is already over 37,000.

Students have the opportunity to study for a semester abroad through exchange programs: many foreign universities are partners of UrFU.

The university closely cooperates with employers in the region and country: this allows keeping educational programs up-to-date and effective, gives students the opportunity to get internships and practical training, start working while studying, and quickly receive attractive job offers. Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

The basic requirements for each applicant are as follows:

  • Completed education: complete secondary or secondary vocational; if you are applying for a place in the master's program — bachelor's or specialist diploma,
  • Successful completion of computer testing or Unified State Exam (including for citizens of foreign countries).

The minimum number of points according to the results of the Unified State Exam (changes every year, current data must be clarified with the admissions committee):

  • Russian language – 40,
  • Literature – 40,
  • Mathematics – 39,
  • Social Studies – 45,
  • History – 35.

To enter a number of study programs, applicants will need to pass the professional test «Creative Competition» (minimum score – 40, may vary). Some faculties have their own entrance tests.
