The date of foundation of this university is considered to be 1921. At the moment, ZabSU eduactes specialists in various fields, ranging from pedagogical to construction.

ZabSU carries out the educational process based on the following faculties:

ZabSU occupies a leading position in its region in the number of specialties of education.  In addition, the university cooperates with the research institutes of such friendly countries for the Russian Federation as China.

For nonresident full-time students and postgraduates, the university provides 5 dormitories for 1044 conats, where 1853 people can live. ZabSU also provides 2 rooms for 6 places for students with disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The average cost of a hostel per month is 1000 rubles.

On the territory of the university there are 8 canteens with a capacity of more than 290 people. 

For the diversity of student life in ZabSU, the following associations carry out their activities:

The process is carried out in 24 buildings with a total area of 84,000 square meters, in classrooms designed for lectures and practical classes. All rooms are equipped with new logistics, including projectors, screens, laptops, audio systems and electronic whiteboards. 

ZabSU provides students with access to the library system with a total fund of more than one million copies of literature. Students have the opportunity to use the multidisciplinary educational resource "Student Consultant", which gives electronic access to educational and methodological literature and additional publications. 

On the territory of the whole university for students free access to the Internet is organized. 

The university has its own Scientific and Educational Museum Complex, which includes:

• Geological Museum of ZabSU;
• Museum of History of ZabSU;
• Museum of Ethnography and Cultures of Transbaikalia.

In ZabSU, the learning process in the academic year is divided into two semesters: autumn and spring. At the end of each, an examination session is held, after which students are given a vacation (in winter in January, in summer in July and August).

When studying at the university, students assume the following additional costs:
