Towson University (TU) is the largest university in the Baltimore area, the second largest university in the University system of Maryland. The basis of the institution was a pedagogical school, which in 1967 was connected with 10 state institutions and received its current name.
In recent years, 64 areas of bachelor's degree, 46 master's programs, 4 specializations of doctoral studies have been presented in TU. The number of students exceeds 22,000, of which about 800 are foreign students from 100 countries.

In the 2023–2024 academic year, $19.2 million was allocated to research projects, and the volume of new external grants amounted to $11.5 million. Key areas are related to cybersecurity, geoinformation technologies, regional economics, educational technologies, and healthcare. Specialized centers operate on campus, such as Cyber4All Center, which focuses on training cybersecurity specialists, and the Center for GIS — a center for geoinformation systems and spatial analysis. Economic research is conducted at the Regional Economic Studies Institute, which analyzes the development of the economy of Maryland and the Baltimore—Washington region.
The university also participates in major research projects: for example, the US National Science Foundation allocated $3.2 million for a joint project called Online Practice Suite, aimed at training natural science teachers.

- Initially, classes were held in Baltimore; only in 1915 did the university move to Towson: the state purchased five farm plots for it, on which the modern campus grew.

Enrolment process
The university accepts applications in several stages. November 1 — early application deadline; during this same period, the university considers candidates for Honors College and academic scholarships. February 1 — main deadline, and June 1 — final deadline for international applicants to submit documents. Applicants who submitted documents by November 1 usually receive a response in mid-January, while applications submitted by February 1 are reviewed until the end of February.
After admission, the applicant confirms their intent to study at the university — for fall intake this must be done by May 1 and an enrollment deposit paid. Those planning to live in residence halls also need to pay a housing deposit.
In master's and doctoral programs the process is similar: the candidate submits an application and pays the registration fee, the faculty reviews the documents, and upon a positive decision the student confirms their spot by paying an enrollment deposit.
