SPbSUT was founded in 1930 on the basis of higher courses of communication and was a special higher educational institution for radio engineering and telecommunications. In 2008, by the Decree of the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, SPbSUT was awarded the Order of Friendship of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for his great contribution to the eduaction of national personnel, specialists in the field of communications and mail, for strengthening friendship between the peoples of Vietnam and Russia.
On October 13, 2020, SPbSUT celebrated its 90th anniversary.

At the disposal of the University there are 6 dormitories. Travel time to the educational buildings is no more than 1 hour. The total capacity is 2148 people.
All dormitories are equipped with a fire safety system. Separately, the rooms of the student council are allocated for sports, creativity and independent learning. Dormitories are equipped with internet, upholstered furniture and bedding.
Students' meals are provided in canteens and cafes. The total capacity of 2 canteens is 300 people, 3 student cafes are designed for 160 seats.

Every year, educational trips "Active School" and "May Active School" are held for first-year students.
On the basis of SPbSUT, the creative association "Bonch Art" was created, which includes the following creative teams:

The university has 3 educational buildings and 2 educational and laboratory complexes. Classrooms are equipped with computer equipment and projection equipment.

The academic year in SPbSUT is standardly divided into two semesters:
- autumn, September-December;
- spring, January-June.
At the end of each, an examination session is held.
Two holidays: winter (January) and (June-August).
The main expenses for nonresident students are payment for accommodation in the hostel and meals. Additional costs:

The cost of living in a hostel for 1 place is 2500-2800 rubles per month.
