SPbGIKiT was founded on September 9, 1918. This is the only university in Russia that trains the entire range of specialists for the film industry, television and the media. Its uniqueness lies in the comprehensive formation of competencies of creative, technical and economic-managerial professions.
The modern teaching staff of the university today consists of 530 people (including 397 full-time teachers). Among them, 48 teachers are doctors of science, professors, 210 are candidates of science, 172 are associate professors.
SPbGIKiT has a Council of Young Scientists and a Center for Additional Education.

The Institute is the owner of the Nika Award for its contribution to the development of film education. Developing international cooperation, SPbGIKiT participates in the ISFP project "International Student Film". Today the Institute is a member of the International Association of Film Schools of the World (SILEKT), a full member of the International Corporation of Graduates of Russian Educational Institutions (INKORVUZ), which received consultative status with UNESCO, a collective member of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The university has 3 paid dormitories. For nonresident and foreign students, housing is provided in one of the dormitories for the period of the entire study at the university, for applicants and part-time students housing is provided for the period of passing the exams.
Canteens are equipped in the educational and laboratory buildings, student cafes work in the dormitories.
Activities St. Petersburg State Institute of Film and Television, SPbGIKiT
Since 2018, thanks to the student initiative, the creative association "Loft" has appeared at the institute, where you can:
- conduct castings, rehearsals, filming for their educational works;
- get acquainted and organize meetings with other students and teachers to discuss joint projects;
- watch movies;
- to demonstrate and discuss their creative works: films, artistic, musical and literary works;
- attend lectures, master classes and seminars of professionals;
- rest and work during the school day.
Participants of the association independently organize educational events and meetings.
SPbGIKiT has a department for cultural and mass work, whose tasks include organizing and holding student events. There is a KVN team and a fan club of FC Zenit. Students have the opportunity to study in a dance studio, take part in various creative competitions. Every year the university hosts the festival "LIK SESSION". The university is a participant of sports championships within the framework of the University Cup.
