The Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory began its activities in 1862 as a music school and to this day is a fairly well-known musical university in the world, the first university of professional music education in Russia.

Since 1991, the Folklore and Ethnographic Center of the Conservatory has been operating on the basis of the Laboratory of Folk Musical Creativity, the main direction of which is the storage, study and use of the fundamental scientific Collection of documentary materials on folklore and ethnography.
The conservatory publishes a quarterly scientific journal Opera musicologica ("Musicological Works"), registered in the scientometric database. The journal comprehensively covers the research activities of domestic and foreign scientists, publishes scientific articles, documents and reviews.
Students of the Conservatory are active participants in all-Russian and international scientific conferences, competitions of scientific works.

The Conservatory actively participates in the international cultural forum of the city, holds regional, all-Russian, international competitions and festivals, master classes of outstanding musicians in Russia and abroad.
