Northeastern was founded in 1867 in Blue Island, Illinois as a teacher's school, Cook County's first teacher-training institution. Bachelor's programs are offered by three schools of the university:

The main campus is located on 67 acres in a quiet residential area of North Park, 10 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. The campus integrates the Physical Education Complex, the Ronald Williams Library, the Bernard J. Brommel Hall, the Lech Walesa Hall, and the campus bookstore.

The Jacob H. Carruthers Research Center (CCICS) is located in Chicago's Historic Bronzeville District. Founded in 1966, CCICS is globally recognized as an Africa-focused higher education institution: it maintains a tradition of academic activists and a warm, nurturing educational climate.

Since 1969, El Centro has been a hub for access to higher education opportunities for the Hispanic community. He owns a permanent new home in a 55,000-square-foot LEED certified modern building in the Avondale area of Chicago. El Centro offers comprehensive bachelor's degree courses and comprehensive academic support for students. He helps the local community through the Community Education Program in partnership with community organizations around Albany Park, Hermosa, Logan Square and Avondale.
