The Institute of Design was founded in 1993 as the Graduate School of Design and Decorative Arts. At the moment, the university provides education at the level of bachelor's, master's, postgraduate and qualification courses.

NID is one of the five universities in Russia, which has a certificate of the International Association of Universities of Design Art and Media CUMULUS.

Facilities and equipment at National Institute of Design, NID
The entire educational process is carried out in one building. The university has classrooms designed for lectures and theoretical classes, which are equipped with the necessary media equipment: projectors and screens. The Institute has three computer classes equipped with new and modern technology, and for the discipline "Volumetric Modeling" offers students ceramics and glass workshops.
Admission dates and extra charges
In the NID, the learning process in the academic year is divided into two semesters: autumn and spring. At the end of each of them, an examination session is held, after which students are given holidays (in winter in January, in summer in July and August).
When studying at the institute, students incur the following additional costs:

Enrolment process
For admission to the institute, the applicant must provide the following list of documents to the admissions office:
- Identity document, citizenship;
- State-issued document on education and qualifications;
- Documents confirming the use of the right to admission within a special quota;
- Documents confirming the individual achievements of the applicant, the results of which are taken into account at the reception;
- Photography.
The documents that are necessary for admission are sent to the institute in one of the following ways:

After graduation, graduates work in large advertising agencies of the Russian Federation and abroad, owners of their own business, teachers in the field of design. Graduates join the Unions of Designers, Architects and Artists of Russia.
Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol
To enter the educational programs of the bachelor's degree, the applicant must:
- Completed education not lower than secondary general;
- Points received for the Unified State Exam in the Russian language and literature are not lower than the threshold score established by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation;
- Points obtained on the basis of the results of entrance profile tests, the minimum points for which are set by the institute itself:
- Drawing;
- Painting;
- Composition.
For admission to master's programs it is necessary:
- Completed higher education;
- Prepared creative portfolio;
- Essay on the proposed topic of the master's thesis.
For admission to postgraduate programs it is necessary:
- Completed education not lower than higher education (specialist's degree, master's degree);
- Successful passing of entrance tests with points not lower:
- Exam in the discipline "Fundamentals of Design Theory" – 80;
- Essay interview — 80.
