The Lyceum was founded in 1982 as school # 542. MEPhI and its teachers brought to the school a new unusual base, well-equipped chemical and physical laboratories, a computing center (a mini-computer with 15 displays - this was atypical for a secondary school in 1982), new technologies, teaching aids, a high level of knowledge and requirements. University Lyceum No. 1511 is part of the MEPhI Pre-University and offers a strong curriculum for gifted students, the latest equipment, work with the best teachers, a university campus atmosphere and a variety of extracurricular programs.

Extracurricular educational work in the Lyceum is based on the specifics of the Lyceum's work (only grades 9-11), based on traditions, some of which have been living since the founding of the school.
