Gymnasium No. 1 is the oldest educational institution in the city: it was founded in 1861 as a second-level female school, and later was reorganized into a gymnasium. Today, the First, as the townspeople call the gymnasium, is one of the best in the city. Throughout history, about 9,000 people graduated from school.
The gymnasium honors its traditions, most of which was laid by V.A. Karakovsky: Vladimir Abramovich became director in 1962. Under him, the school became specialized, programs for the in-depth study of foreign languages appeared, traditions were laid down: Memorial Day for the dead students, Creative Day, Communal gathering.
The educational institution is proud of its graduates, among which:
The monument to the 20th anniversary of the victory over the Nazis was unveiled by the school’s administration, teachers and students; graduates of the school of 1941 year of birth were present at the opening. The official name is “Memory,” the students call in a family way - “Alyosha”.
The peculiarity of the gymnasium is that children begin to learn English in the second grade.
In the fifth grade, a second foreign language is added to English - German or French (optional).
In grades 9–11, those that help broaden one's horizons and improve knowledge of a foreign language are added to general subjects: regional studies of Great Britain and the USA, courses of English and American literature.
Particular attention is paid to the nutrition of schoolchildren, on which their health, appearance, and educational process depend. Every day in the diet of students there are: meat or fish, dairy products, vegetables and fruits, bread, butter and vegetable oil. Fresh products are purchased from domestic manufacturers. The menu is drawn up two weeks in advance - it can be found on the school's website and directly in the cafeteria.
The most beloved tradition of the first gymnasium is communal fees: this is an event that has been held every spring for more than 50 years. Current students and graduates of different years gather at the school for three days during the spring break: during these days they get to know each other, socialize, hold charity and entertainment events, trainings for personal growth, etc.
The Museum on Krasnaya is a place where rare information about the gymnasium itself, the city and the country is collected by the students and school staff, which contributes to their patriotic education.
Another feature of the gymnasium is the theatrical education of students and the work of the Theater on Krasnaya. The theater troupe has about 30 people - students in grades 5-11.
In the framework of the program of aesthetic education of schoolchildren work:
Every year, sports activists take part in the festival "Golden Autumn", a basketball tournament, "Big Football Week", a volleyball match between students and students, the competition "Oh, come on, guys!", Presidential games, and regional competitions.
