Gymnasium No. 1 is the oldest educational institution in the city: it was founded in 1861 as a second-level female school, and later was reorganized into a gymnasium. Today, the First, as the townspeople call the gymnasium, is one of the best in the city. Throughout history, about 9,000 people graduated from school.

The gymnasium honors its traditions, most of which was laid by V.A. Karakovsky: Vladimir Abramovich became director in 1962. Under him, the school became specialized, programs for the in-depth study of foreign languages appeared, traditions were laid down: Memorial Day for the dead students, Creative Day, Communal gathering.

The educational institution is proud of its graduates, among which:

• Valery Vladimirovich Medvedev - children's writer, author of a series of works about Yuri Barankin: “Barankin, be a man!”, “Super adventures of the super-cosmonaut”, “And again this Barankin or the Great Pursuit”, “Unknown Adventures of Barankin”. The prototypes of the heroes of the works, as the author admits, were his classmates - students of gymnasium No. 1.
• Alevtina Fedorovna Brovkina is an ophthalmologist, creator of the Russian Oncophthalmological School, laureate of the USSR State Prize, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, laureate of the RF Government Prize.

The monument to the 20th anniversary of the victory over the Nazis was unveiled by the school’s administration, teachers and students; graduates of the school of 1941 year of birth were present at the opening. The official name is “Memory,” the students call in a family way - “Alyosha”.
