Calvin University (formerly Calvin College) — a private Christian liberal arts university founded in 1876 and located in Grand Rapids, the second-largest city in Michigan. Education is built on liberal arts traditions and aimed at the comprehensive development of the individual.

The university brings together six schools and offers bachelor's, master's, and continuing education programs. Calvin consistently ranks among the best regional universities in the Midwest according to the authoritative American ranking U.S. News & World Report and is known for strong teaching and student involvement in research.

The university's faculty members are doctors in their fields and are always available to students. Classes are held in small groups so that students can interact closely with professors. Students participate in research alongside faculty, and some courses abroad are also taught by professors.

The academic process emphasizes practice: students complete internships at local companies, non-profit organizations, and medical institutions in Grand Rapids. Support is provided by the Career Center, online LifeWork modules on career guidance and financial literacy, the Rhetoric Center (assistance with written assignments and presentations), as well as a registration and student services office offering counseling, tutoring, and services for students with special needs. The Calvin Core general education program allows students to flexibly change their area of study even after two or three years.

The academic structure of the university combines six schools. Bachelor's programs are available with a wide selection of majors, minors, and certificates, including the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences.

Calvin University ranks among the best regional universities in the Midwest according to U.S. News & World Report: the university holds 4th place in the overall ranking in this category and is highly rated for undergraduate teaching quality and innovation. The university is also featured in Money Magazine selections (Best Colleges For Your Money), as well as in The Princeton Review and Fiske Guide to Colleges.

The university's sports teams (NCAA Division III) have become national champions in men's basketball, men's and women's cross country, and women's volleyball. Calvin also ranks among the Division III leaders in the number of students named to the All-American academic team.

The university provides on-campus housing. Students have access to traditional residence halls as well as Knollcrest East apartment-style housing. A limited supply of on-campus housing is also available for graduate students — Knollcrest East apartments and individual single rooms in the residence halls.

Residents living on campus have access to a meal plan system, including a full plan with 21 meals per week. Dining services are managed by the university's food service department.

The university actively develops off-campus programs: trips take place throughout the year in the formats of fall and spring semesters, a winter intensive in January, a spring break program, and a summer intensive in May, with the programs themselves held in various countries around the world.

Athletic life is built around the university's participation in NCAA Division III: students have access to 25 varsity sports teams, as well as club and intramural sports. The Arts Collective creative association is active, where students of any major engage in visual art, music, literature, and theater, learn together, and visit cultural centers.

The college proves its level every year, takes part in the list of TOP of the best higher educational institutions of the world ranking.

It is talking about a small-scale educational institution, where about 5,000 people take a course each year. Students are admitted by a special commission. Both locals and foreign students can get here for studying. All students can apply for participation in international exchange programs between universities. 

University infrastructure

As part of their studying, all students have access to the university’s huge library. Also, students can live in a dorm. The university participate in different groups and scientific communities.

The academic year is divided into fall and spring semesters and is supplemented by summer classes, as well as accelerated learning formats — four-week intensives and eight-week accelerated terms. The fall semester begins in late August.

Upon enrollment, a deposit is paid to secure a place. Additionally, an onboarding fee and orientation program fees are provided. In addition to tuition, the cost structure includes housing, meals, textbooks and materials, transportation, personal expenses, health insurance, and a parking permit.

A significant portion of the university's graduates find employment or continue their studies in master's and doctoral programs. Almost every student completes an internship before graduating, and some students are hired annually for research work in the natural and humanities sciences during the summer period.

Calvin graduates successfully gain admission to graduate and professional schools in law, medicine, and business.

Every year admission of students at the university holds by a special selection committee, which decision is based on data on the academic performance of each applicant. At the same time, both locals and foreign students apply for places in a higher education institution on the same conditions. It is noteworthy that about 90 percent of applications from students receive approval. Nevertheless, the situation may differ slightly depending on which faculty we are talking about.

Calvin College tuition fees

This is not the cheapest place. All students are equally available assistance from the university in the form of scholarships, subject to good academic performance. 

All applicants are automatically considered for academic scholarships upon enrollment. In addition, named scholarships, need-based grants, and student loans are available. Transfer students are eligible for the Transfer Student Award of $3,000, and high school applicants who visited the campus are eligible for the Visit Grant of $2,000.

Admissions are conducted on a need-blind basis (financial situation is not considered when making admission decisions). The university does not award athletic scholarships.
