  • Location: Friesingol, Bradford, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom
  • Age of students: 6-18;
  • Number of students:
  • Language of instruction: English
  • Type of education: private full-time school of co-education.

Bradford Grammar School is one of the most famous private schools in the British Isles, striving to provide its students - both junior and senior - with all the opportunities to achieve academic excellence, sports, musical and creative achievements in an environment of care and comfort, confidence in their heritage. The school aims to make the lives of its pets exciting and fulfilling, based on its traditional values.

The school was founded in 1548, and in 1662 received its own charter from King Charles II Stuart. Until 1975, it remained a gymnasium based on direct funding, and after the reform and abolition it became an independent non-state educational institution.

During World War II, the main building was used as a military center, and most of the students were evacuated. When the army stopped using the building and the war ended, the school reopened in its original location. In the schoolyard of the institution there is a large memorial to the memory of students who died during the war.

Things to know about

The school grounds are used by the British Royal Family as a helipad. The last time a member of the ruling dynasty visited the school in this way was in 2020 – it was Prince William, who flew the helicopter with his own hands.

Activities Bradford Grammar School

Like most British private schools, Bradford Grammar School has tremendous experience in terms of sports. Among its graduates are numerous members of the British team and Olympic medalists: triathletes Alistair and Brownlee, swimmer Moorhouse.

The most important sport in school for boys is rugby, and for girls - netball or hockey. The school's team regularly participates in local, regional and national competitions, winning prestigious awards and prizes. Other popular sports include orienteering and walking, squash and tennis, table tennis and badminton, cross-country running, rowing and freestyle, cricket, swimming and water polo. Bicycle racing is quite popular.

The school has a hockey court and 9 netball and tennis courts; Built in 2008, this complex is equipped with changing rooms, showers and a spacious conference room.

In addition to other types of extracurricular activities, the school has had a cadet unit operating as a RAF unit since 1980. In the basement of one of the buildings there is a 25-meter shooting range.

Great importance is attached not only to sports, but also to the arts and music. Within the walls of the school there is a concert orchestra and two age bands, three choirs for different groups, a jazz band, several musical groups of various profiles, wind and saxophone groups. On request, students can create their own ensembles and instrumental groups.

The walls of school corridors and halls are decorated with works of students and graduates. Every two years, students and teachers jointly prepare a large theatrical production or musical. In addition, not a month goes by without recitation competitions, Shakespeare performances and other events, as drama has an important role to play in fostering a sense of community: it allows teenagers to reveal their individuality through art, experience the thrill of standing on stage, work on a script or help build scenery, sew costumes, tune sound and light.

Another format of extracurricular work - no less important than others - is considered to be hiking and other forays into nature (which is more than natural given the proximity to the Yorkshire Dales and the beauties of the Lake District). Near the school there are dozens of hiking trails of local, regional and national importance. Such activity serves to expand horizons, awakens a thirst for adventure and a craving for beauty.

Advantages

  • Pupils of the school traditionally demonstrate high success in passing the exams of the GCSE and A-level level (99% for more than 20 years);
  • 31 A-level courses;
  • Unique quality of teaching programs;
  • Good location in a quiet, safe and picturesque place with a rich history.

Facilities and equipment at Bradford Grammar School

In the past, Bradford was considered the world center of the wool and cloth industry: thanks to the local shepherds, England managed to keep Flanders in its political orbit for two hundred years. A rich historical heritage and a multi-ethnic, thriving society clearly demonstrate the balance between tradition and progress inherent in Bradford Grammar School.

The school campus is located over 28 acres a few kilometers from Salter, a model village of the Queen Victoria era, named after industrial magnate Titos Salt, and the River Eyre, which flows through its forests and parks. Taken together, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other noteworthy sites include salt mills and the nearby Cartwright Hall, where the largest collection of paintings by David Hockney, one of the graduates of the Bradford School, is placed. In addition, the city is home to the National Museum of Science and Media, designed to serve as a source of inspiration for future scientists and engineers. Bradford lives a rich cultural life, many literary, scientific and culinary festivals and competitions attract hundreds of thousands of people here every year. The city has received from UNESCO the status of the world's first city of Cinema and is fighting to become a city of culture in the UK.

The unique location in the foothills of the Pennines allows, on the one hand, to preserve all the advantages of a modern metropolis, but at the same time to please the eye with magnificent landscapes, the atmosphere of the swamps of the country of Bronte, as well as the largest British national park, the Lake District, located just two hours away. Among other famous attractions located nearby are medieval castles and trading cities, the Victorian resort of Harrogate, historic York.

Over the past quarter century, the school has invested more than £20 million in its development, starting from the opening of the Sixth Form centre in 2001 (the construction was 70% funded by Roger Evans and alumni fees). Another major facility is a large theater adjacent to the sports hall and serving as an arena for school theatrical productions and concerts.

Serious funds are also spent on updating the "fleet" of computers, and today the school proudly boasts the most powerful, modern computer systems and laboratories in this part of the country.

The sports infrastructure is represented by an all-weather sports indoor complex, where tennis courts and netball courts with artificial lighting are located, allowing you to use the object at any time of the day. There is a school cafeteria nearby with an accessible menu. In the open air there is also a cricket ground with artificial turf for 8 tracks, hockey fields for boys and girls, one of which is indoor, working both in winter and in summer.

Along with outdoor sports grounds, the school can offer a hall for power simulators, an indoor gym, a swimming pool for competitions with a length of tracks of 25 meters, a complex of locker rooms and towers, and much more, including:

  • Gym with rowing machines, exercise bikes, treadmills and weights,
  • Gymnastics and Dance Hall,
  • Spacious playgrounds,
  • Outdoor courts for squash and tennis,
  • Rowing station on the River Eyre.

Enrolment process

For admission, it is necessary to fill out an application form (in junior and high schools, in the Sixth form submitted separately). After submitting the application, representatives of the school administration will contact the parents of applicants to clarify the formalities.

Admission to a junior school is based on a competitive assessment. Children are invited to school for one day and pass entrance exams in English and mathematics, and social pedagogues after the interview will assess the communicative and social skills of potential students. After the visit to the school, parents will receive a letter from the director with the results of the assessment and exams.

The number of seats is limited, additional places in the absence of vacancies are not provided.

Pupils enrolled in school in the lower grades are not required to take additional examinations or pass tests for admission to high school.

For high school students, in some cases, an interview is conducted with the admissions committee or the director, in others the application and exam results are sufficient.

Scholarships Bradford Grammar School

Nor does the school offer scholarships to needy students for current academic achievements, but five scholarships are awarded annually by order of the director; 4 of them are addressed to successful applicants, and the last - to successful students who demonstrated outstanding results in the exam of the 6th grade Clock House. Each such scholarship entitles you to a 20% discount - provided that you maintain high academic performance.

Charter scholarships of £100 per year are also available for the duration of your stay at the school.
