Gateshead Jewish Teacher College, located in the ancient town of Bensham, is considered one of the best and most prestigious women's religious college schools in the UK. It is located on Buick Road, surrounded by half a dozen other Jewish educational institutions.
Basically, the contingent of students is formed from residents of the United States and North Africa, but the proportion of Europeans and Israelis is also consistently high. Less common are natives of the CIS countries and Asian countries.
It was founded in collaboration with rabbi Dovid Drian's yeshiva, founded here in 1929. In 2019, the trustees of the educational institution obtained permission from the Gateshead City Council to build an extension.
The purpose of creating this educational institution is to provide the female part of the local Jewish community with the opportunity to receive a relevant and time-appropriate education, in which the traditional canons of Judaism and modern formats and teaching methods would be moderately and harmoniously combined. The experiment was successful, and the seminary not only prepares its pupils for family life and teaches the canons of doctrine, but also gives a sought-after and socially significant specialty in the field of pedagogy and early care. At the same time, the educational institution sets itself several simple and understandable goals:
- Instill confidence and determination in students, creating a cozy and comfortable, safe atmosphere;
- Stimulate the development of self-esteem;
- To provide students with the skills, knowledge and qualifications necessary for life in society necessary to continue an academic career, job search and self-realization;
- Provide tools for the Torah home, teach them to use them so that students can raise their own children and work as an educator in full accordance with the traditional values of Judaism, combining theoretical knowledge and the application of Torah precepts in practice.
Educational process
- The educational program is very rich, but is characterized by a certain flexibility: the results of the exams are secondary, the effort and diligence expended are important;
- The three-year program allows students to make friends from all over the globe, to gain the skills of interaction with both peers and with younger and older girls. Unlike many other educational institutions, Beth Midrash Lemoroth – Jewish Teachers College treats its students like adults and requires a conscious, responsible and balanced approach.
- The college does not offer additional educational programs and electives, but some courses can be found thanks to the local community (including linguistic and computer courses).
Things to know about
The history of Gateshead seminaries began with a tin barn at the synagogue: the first years of classes were held among recyclables, by the light of a single "temporary" lamp.
