The university was founded in 1933 in the city of Barnaul, in 2011 it entered the Barnaul educational cluster.

The learning process includes a course of lectures and seminars, practical and laboratory classes, educational and pre-diploma practice.

The university provides nonresident full-time students with 6 dormitories for 1795 places in total.

For meals for students and staff, the university has five canteens for 511 seats.

The educational process takes place in 4 buildings of Altai State Pedagogical University, which are equipped with classrooms for lectures and seminars, practical and laboratory classes. The classrooms have the necessary equipment: screens, projectors, electronic whiteboards and computers. 

Students are given free access to three educational and scientific libraries of the university with reading rooms with a capacity of 382 seats.

At Altai State Pedagogical University, the academic year is divided into two semesters: autumn and spring. At the end of each, an examination session is held, after passing the students, they are given vacations (in winter in January, in summer in July and August).
