The Academy of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia was founded on November 1, 1934.

The educational process is organized at the following faculties:

The main directions of research work of the Academy of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia:

• Problems of management of the penal system,
• Problems of production and economic and financial and economic activities of the penal system,
• Problems of public utilities for convicts,
• Problems of labor adaptation of convicts,
• Scientific support for the activities of the operational units of the penal system,
• Problems of professional training of employees of the penal system,
• Problems of staffing the activities of the penal system.

The Academy of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia conducts international cooperation with the following organizations:

• Mogilev Institute of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus,
• Karaganda Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan named after B. Beisenov,
• People's Police Academy of the Ministry of Public Security of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam,
• University of Internal Affairs of Mongolia,
• Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus.

The Academy of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia provides a dormitory for accommodation of variable composition for 800 places.

For meals for students and staff, the Academy is equipped with a canteen for 700 seats.

To involve students in social and scientific activities, the Academy of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia organizes and takes part in the following events:

• Relay race "Ready for service in the penitentiary system",
• Review competition of the system and songs among first-year students,
• Volleyball tournament among training and combat units,
• Kettlebell Lifting Tournament,
• Championship of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in shooting from combat small arms,
• Championship of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in track and field athletics cross country and service biathlon,
• Workout tournament.

The educational activities of the Academy of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia are carried out in a single educational and administrative building. The building houses lecture halls, classrooms, computer classes and specialized rooms, classrooms are equipped with modern computer and multimedia equipment.

Students are given free access to the library.

At the Academy of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, the academic year is divided into two semesters: autumn and spring. At the end of each, an examination session is held, after passing the students, they are given vacations (in winter in January, in summer in July and in August).

For admission to the Academy of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, you must provide:

• Identity card, citizenship (passport),
• State-recognized certificate of education and qualifications,
• Confirmation of the passage of a military medical examination of the state of health,
• Confirmation of the passage of professional and psychological selection,
• Confirmation of the passage of standards for physical training,
• Confirmation of the individual achievements of the applicant.

The necessary package of documents is submitted to the Academy through the territorial body of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the subject of the Russian Federation at the place of permanent residence.

At the Academy of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, graduates are seconded to the bodies of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia.

For admission to bachelor's and specialist's educational programs, an applicant must:

1. Completed education not lower than secondary general,
2. Successful completion of additional entrance exams of the Academy. Minimum passing scores:

• Social Studies (interview) – 12,
• Biology (interview) — 12,
• Mathematics (test) - 20,

3. Successful passing of the exam. Minimum passing scores:

• Social Studies — 42,
• Russian language — 36,
• History — 32,
• Biology — 36,
• Mathematics — 27.
