10 cities in the world that tourists should stay away from

10 cities in the world that tourists should stay away from

According to the latest data, the most dangerous cities in the world for travelers include:

  • The capital of Venezuela, Caracas, whose main attractions include many historical sites. Traditional tourist checkpoints here are Bolívar Square, the Cathedral, the Archbishop's Chamber, the National Congress, the Juan Antonio Pérez Museum, the University Campus (included in the UNESCO World Heritage List), the General Rafael Urdaneta Bridge, the open East Park and the Cariquao Zoo and others. But the aesthetic enjoyment of the exoticism of the city is overshadowed by the high level of poorly solved crime (often not solved). A characteristic feature of Caracas, alas, are armed robberies and kidnapping for ransom, pickpocket and car theft, etc.

  • Kingston, the capital of Jamaica, is undoubtedly considered one of the most attractive cities in the world for tourists. Objects to visit are the museum of the pirate city of Port Royal, the Hope Botanical Garden, the Devon House mansion, the reggae museum of performer Bob Marley, the jungle and beaches surrounding this place ... On the other hand, Jamaica is notorious as one of the most dangerous regions on the planet. For example, there are about 53 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants of this island (2022 data), which is the highest rate among Latin American and Caribbean countries. Robberies, street attacks, rape, pickpocketing, drug crimes and banditry are common in the capital.

  • The Mexican city of Tijuana is a large city, historically divided into separate districts. For tourists, the most attractive are four: the Centro area (old town), where the most popular street is located, Avenida Revolución; Rio zone - modern Downtown (business district); Playas, famous for its hills and beaches; the Norte zone is the local "red light district". In addition to beautiful places and attractions, the city also has sad statistics - a large drug cartel is operating here, selling cocaine to America. The city is recognized as the most dangerous in the world. According to the 2022 ratings, it has the highest level of organized crime: for every 100,000 inhabitants, there are 138 murders (about seven every day), kidnappings for ransom, human trafficking, drug sales, frequent shootings between gangs and the police.

  • The capital of Kenya, Nairobi , is known for its national park with elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, lions, jackals and other animals. There is a National Museum with unique exhibits, and the markets sell numerous local exotics (crafts, jewelry, products). At the same time, the city has a bad reputation: extortion, theft / car theft, robbery, kidnapping, arms trafficking and terrorism.

  • The oldest city of the Republic of South Africa – Cape Town – is very popular with tourists. Attractive places for travelers are: Table Mountain overlooking the ocean - one of the seven new wonders of nature, numerous shops, restaurants in ethnic style, the "Aquarium of Two Oceans", the Fortress of Good Hope, Robben Island, etc. However, crime is rampant in the city: murders (more than 68 for every 100,000 people), rape, robbery, banditry.

  • The capital of Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby, is also on the list of the most unreliable places for tourists. On the one hand, there is a very attractive exotic for foreigners: a collection of traditional art of local peoples, rare species of flora and fauna, excellent conditions for surfing / diving and fishing on the shores of the Coral Sea. At the same time, according to experts from the UN, the city is one of the critically dangerous places for people: many local gangs from the slums, kidnappings, rapes, murders. Port Moresby is also notorious as a source of infectious diseases (for example, malaria).

  • Rio de Janeiro is a Brazilian metropolis famous for its beaches (Copacabana, Ipanema), mountains (Corcovana with a statue of Christ the Redeemer in the Art Deco style, Sugarloaf), rhythms of salsa / bossa carnival, etc. All these beauties fade due to crime and appalling poverty in the favelas: there is the spread of drugs, and clashes between gangs, and kidnappings for ransom, theft and human trafficking.

  • Port-au-Prince in Haiti attracts tourists with a number of exotic places and original cuisine of different nations. But there are serious problems related to security, infrastructure, hygiene. Almost every day there are killings of civilians, endless gangster clashes. The city has a high risk of contracting yellow fever, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis.

  • The capital of Iraq, Baghdad , has both positive conditions for tourists and dangerous moments. A large number of attractions are noted here: the monument to Ali Baba and forty thieves, the Abbasid Palace, the al-Haidarkhan mosque, gardens, parks, shops with oriental flavor, etc. Of the dangers of Baghdad, alas, it is worth noting kidnappings, robberies, rapes, murders, the terrorist threat from religious extremist groups, etc.

  • In the main city of Afghanistan, Kabul, there is something to see for tourists: mosques, fortresses, gardens and other picturesque places. At the same time, there is one of the highest levels of danger: military conflicts, terrorist attacks, shootings, explosions, kidnappings of foreigners.
