VGLTU was founded on July 23, 1930 and is one of the oldest universities in the Voronezh region. The progenitor of this well-known educational institution in the Chernozem region is the Forest Department of the Voronezh Agricultural Institute, where the education of specialists for forestry began in 1918.

Scientific achievements
To promote the development of creative scientific activity of young scientists and coordinate their work, the University has a Council of Young Scientists, which includes 22 people:

- 9 students and undergraduates - representatives from each faculty of the university.
In 2021, 103 student works were submitted for competitions for the best research, 19 awards were received in the form of diplomas and diplomas, 507 awards for students' participation in competitions, Olympiads, exhibitions.
In 2021, 5 applications were submitted from students and 8 from graduate students for intellectual property objects, 20 were received (by students and 27 by graduate students) of protection documents for an object of intellectual property. Students submitted 19 applications for grant competitions.

Since 2020, the University has been operating the Research Institute of Innovative Technologies and the Forest Complex. In 2021, an engineering center was created on the basis of VGLTU as a modern ecosystem of scientific creativity and innovation.

Things to know about
The world fame of the forest experimental business of the Central Black Earth Region was created by the names of scientists F.H. Mayer, I.N. Shatilov, G.F. Morozov, G.N. Vysotsky, Academy of Sciences. Verekhi, G.N. Kornakovsky, V.N. Shturm and others.
Graduates of the university work as managers and specialists of forestry, timber processing complexes and furniture industries around the world: in Germany, China, Kenya, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela, cis countries.
In 1980, for special merits in the field of education engineering personnel, the development of scientific research and international cooperation in the field of education, VGLU was awarded the Order of Friendship of Peoples.
