The university was founded in 1956, is a large complex, which is located simultaneously in five subjects of the Russian Federation. 

The learning process includes a course of lectures and seminars, practical and laboratory classes, educational and pre-diploma practice.

The priority areas of USTU in scientific research are:

• Rolling stock of railways: research and design of components and parts of rolling stock; improvement of maintenance and repair; automation of brake control modes;
• Power supply in railway transport: research and design of power supply systems and devices, improving their reliability;
• Constructive solutions and calculation methods for railway tracks, industrial and civil buildings; prediction of deformation of the earth's surface; development of underground space;

• Information and analytical management systems for transport, industry and construction enterprises; management of information flows; protection of information;

For nonresident full-time students, the university provides a campus, which includes 8 corridor-type dormitories. 

For meals for students and staff, the university has two canteens, three buffets and a café. The total number of seats is 572.

The educational process takes place on the basis of 4 buildings, equipped with classrooms for lectures and seminars, practical and laboratory classes. The classrooms are equipped with the necessary modern equipment: screens, projectors, computers and electronic whiteboards. 

Students are given free access to the library with a reading room for 170 seats.

For sports, the university has the following sports facilities:

At USTU, the learning process is divided into two semesters: autumn and spring. At the end of each, an examination session is held, after passing the students, they are given vacations (in winter in January, in summer in July and August).
