The year of foundation of the university is considered to be 1958, when the training and consulting center of the Moscow Institute of Petrochemical and Gas Industry named after I.M. Gubkin was opened in Ukhta.
USTU is one of the largest multidisciplinary technical universities in the European North of the country, the flagship university of PJSC Gazprom.

In the field of scientific and innovative activities of USTU, the following strategic projects are outlined:

- ensuring reliability and environmental safety in the construction and operation of drilling, oil and gas and pipeline facilities in the Far North and permafrost;
- development and improvement of technical means and technologies for the rational development of forest resources in the Far North;
- development of high-strength frost-resistant composite building materials for the arrangement of civil and industrial facilities in the subarctic territories.
The university conducts research within the framework of 7 scientific and pedagogical schools:
- Actual problems of formation, forecasting, prospecting and exploration of deposits;
- Machines, equipment and processes in oil and gas production and transport in the Far North;
- Application of physicochemical and rheological methods of research of anomalous oils to improve the efficiency and safety of their pipeline transport;
- Drilling wells in the European North;
- Experimental and theoretical studies of physical and mechanical systems based on structural and analytical mesomechanics and methods of non-destructive testing, taking into account wave processes;
- Topical issues of oil and gas transportation and storage;
- Management of socio-economic processes in the context of sustainable development of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation.
The University is the founder of two scientific journals.

The academic year begins on September 1 and is divided into two semesters, each ending with a test and examination session in accordance with the curriculum.
