The scientific achievements of SPbSU cover a wide range of fields. In the university's laboratories, Mendeleev's periodic table of chemical elements was created. Today, new medicines and neuroprosthetics are being developed here, innovative computer methods for assembling vertebrate genomes are being created, and interdisciplinary research in the field of child development and cognitive processes is being conducted.
More than 1,100 doctors of science, 26 academicians of the RAS and RAE, and 22 corresponding members of the RAS and RAE work in the scientific departments of SPbSU. Biomedical projects have received international recognition: leading world scientists Raul Gainetdinov, Alla Lapidus, and Elena Leonova have established their own laboratories at the university.

Admission to bachelor's, specialist's, and master's degree programs is carried out through the Applicant's Personal Account. The information centers of the SPbGU admissions office operate in remote consultation mode by phone and email (Monday–Friday from 10:00 to 18:00, Saturday from 10:00 to 14:00).
Upon admission, all documents issued in a foreign language must be submitted with a notarized translation into Russian. For enrollment, the following are also required: an application for admission, an identity document, an education document, and a photograph.
