Lyceum No. 5 was founded in 1969. Since 2005, this educational institution has been included in the list of the best schools in Russia, since 2006 it has been the owner of a grant from the President of the Russian Federation, since 2017 - a regional studying ground for teachers of the Kursk region.
Primary general education (7 - 10 years): the program consists of learning the basic subjects.
Basic general education (11 - 16 years old): a general education program, consisting of basic subjects and preparation for passing the OGE.
Secondary general education (17 - 18 years old): the main program includes basic subjects and in-depth study of the disciplines chosen for passing the exam.
The school provides free hot meals for students in grades 1–4 and paid meals for everyone.

School classes are equipped with the necessary subjects and materials for teaching; in the library, students can use methodological, educational and fiction literature. The gym is equipped with the necessary equipment; there is a stadium on the school territory for playing sports in the warm season.
The building of the lyceum is equipped with a fire alarm, the necessary signs. The building is fully prepared for visiting by students with disabilities.
The academic year runs from September 2 to May 30. In grades 1–8, the year is divided into trimesters, in grades 9–11 - into six months.

A five-day camp for students (boys) in grade 10 runs from May 18 to May 22.
Enrollment in Lyceum No. 5 is subject to availability. Parents / legal representatives must complete an application and provide documents required by the school.
Financial incentives are received by students who have distinguished themselves in the Olympiad activities = 250 rubles.
