Buryat State University named after Dorji Banzarov was founded on February 10, 1932 as the Buryat-Mongolian Agropedagogical Institute.

The university has a sports and recreation camp "Olympus", located on the lake. Shchuchye is 100 km from the city of Ulan-Ude, and the boarding house "Baikal", located in the village of Maksimikha, Barguzinsky district, 220 km from the city of Ulan-Ude.

The academic year begins on September 1 and is divided into two semesters, each ending with a test and examination session in accordance with the academic session. In the school year, holidays are established with a total duration of at least 7 weeks.
