Chinese universities evaluated 500 universities. The rating includes 151 American educational institutions, 39 German universities , 35 Chinese universities, 37 British and 2 Russian - St. Petersburg State University, Moscow State University. A rating was made on the basis of the following criteria:
- the size of the campus;
- the citation of researchers;

- the number of graduates who have received a Fields or Nobel Prize
The academic community criticized the Shanghai rating. Russian experts, in particular the rector of Moscow State University, called it fundamentally biased. No less severely criticized the rating of scientists from France. They, as well as Russian specialists in the field of education, expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that universities were assessed only on the indicators of research activities, prizes, prizes and the size of educational institutions. France is losing to Britain and the US mainly on the latter level. Universities of the country are too "small" in comparison with Anglo-Saxon and American giants. French universities in the rating are on 40 - 70 positions in the rating.
