USE in the US: the final testing will be easier

USE in the US: the final testing will be easier

The universal system for testing schoolchildren is being developed today in many countries. Its main goal is to effectively identify the actual level of knowledge in the real educational process. The system should be modern, objective, taking into account the human factor.

All these conditions can be met only if the test is continually refined. The actualization of the structure and content of the system makes it possible to effectively and objectively assess the level of knowledge of school leavers.

Testing in Russia and America

Today the USE is used for final testing of schoolchildren in Russia. It is the official form of final school and university entrance examinations since 2009. Unified State Exam changes annually. Additions and amendments are made to both the structure and content of testing.

American schoolchildren also rent their EGE. The testing system is called SAT. The academic assessment test is to change the structure and content. Introduced in America in 1901 SAT has changed more than once. The new version of testing students will see in 2016.

SAT today and tomorrow

The testing system is developed, modified and supplemented by the College Board. In the non-profit organization today they say about the need to make serious changes in the final school exam.

The last time the test was significantly changed was in 2005. Today American schoolchildren perform SAT assignments for 3 hours and 45 minutes. The results are estimated at 600 - 2400 points. Testing is chargeable. Its cost is $ 51. Low-income schoolchildren and orphans are given preferential terms for paying for testing.

The new SAT 2016 will change the scoring system. The scale is planned to be reduced from 2400 points to 1600. Also it is necessary to cancel "penalties" for incorrect answers. Today every mistake on SAT costs ¼ point. The missed question does not affect the number of points.

Another change will affect the words section. It will be simplified. Today's SAN vocabulary has a specific character. Since 2016, the general vocabulary will be assessed predominantly. The words section will be replenished with expressions, idioms, terms used in everyday life, schools and universities.

Changes will affect the essay writing section. The main news of the project is the cancellation of the compulsory essay. That is, the task, considered one of the most difficult, will remain in the SAT, but individual points will be added for it, which will improve the result of the exam. However, the requirements for the essay will increase. The task will be of an analytical nature. The time for its implementation will increase to 50 minutes (against 25 in SAW 2005).

Preconditions for educational change

In the United States, educational experts are concerned that in recent years, the Asian educational system has not only overtaken the schoolchildren in terms of the quality of knowledge, but has also surpassed the American one. In 2013, the results of PISA (a program for assessing the educational achievements of schoolchildren) were published. In international testing, the best results were shown by students in East Asia (South Korea, Taiwan,China , Singapore). They demonstrated strong academic knowledge and skills. American students were in the middle of the rating.

Specialists in the United States believe that a change in the system of final testing of students will help fix the situation. The new SAT will provide the opportunity to optimize labor costs in preparation for the exam. And the test results will become less dependent on training with tutors, which requires considerable expenses and, accordingly, many Americans can not afford.
