Description

The ONCAMPUS program at the University of Rhode Island is designed for foreign students who want to enter the University of Rhode Island for undergraduate programs. For those who wish to receive post-secondary education in the United States, it is difficult to adapt to the education system and the order of the university, and this program is designed to facilitate the adaptation of the student and help him to acquire the necessary academic, social and behavioral skills to successfully integrate into a new collective and value system.

The program is designed for applicants from the age of 17 who graduated from high school and speak English at the level of IELTS from 5.5 or TOEFL - 60. The program lasts one academic year (2 semesters) and can begin 3 times a year - in January, May and August. Depending on the start time, there are three options for the program:

Option 1:

  • Semester 1 - from January 16 to May 12
  • Semester 2 - from May 22 to August 11

Option 2:

  • Semester 1 - from May 20 to August 11
  • Semester 2 - from August 28 to December 22

Option 3:

  • Semester 1 - 28 August - 22 December
  • Semester 2 - from January to May.

The program includes carefully selected academic courses necessary for the full involvement of the student in the diversity of university programs and areas of study. In addition to academic subjects, students are actively engaged in English, improving their level. For regular monitoring of academic progress, students carry out various projects, write essays, prepare presentations. Also during the academic year, inconspicuous "slices" for students are held, at which the teachers find out the success of mastering this or that course / area of ​​knowledge and set priorities for further work. Academic subjects are assessed by the university system of credits (each subject is from 1 to 4 credits). To successfully complete the year of study, the student needs to receive  32 credits (16 in each of the semesters).

Semester 1:

1.Academic subjects (16 credits)

  • Skills of writing (3 credits)
  • Pre-calculation (3 credits)
  • Introduction to film production (3 credits)
  • Introduction to biology (3 credits)
  • Cultural anthropology (3 credits)
  • Planning for academic success (1 credit)

2.English language

  • English for Academic Purposes (4 hours a week)
  • English for special purposes (2 hours per week).

Semester 2:

1.Academic subjects (16 credits):

  • Basics of Communication (3 credits)
  • Calculations (3 credits)
  • Resource Economics (3 credits)
  • Chemistry (4 credits)
  • World literature (3 credits)

2.English language

  • English for Academic Purposes (4 hours a week)
  • English for special purposes (2 hours per week).

In addition to subjects and the English language, every foreign student receives additional support from teachers and university staff during their studies. Support includes:

1.Special adaptation workshops:

  • 2 hours a week
  • Studying the resources of the University of Rhode Island
  • Intercultural and international relations and mutual understanding
  • Use outside the educational development opportunities
  • Introduction to Academic Skills / Learning Skills for Successful Development

2. Support of academic skills

  • 8 hours a week
  • Comprehensive support of the student in his research activities
  • Development of skills necessary for successful study

3. Personal counseling

  • Passes as required in the format 1 to 1 (teacher-student)
  • Support on all necessary issues, including training, adaptation issues and others.
