The program International Year One (Undergraduate accelerator)

1. Age of participants: from 17 years

2. Duration of the programs: 2 semesters (9 months), 3 semesters (12 months)

4. Level of English:

  • Integrated Program (Integrated Accelerator Program): IELTS 6.5 (indicators in all sections not below 6.0), TOEFL 80
  • The academic program (Academic Accelerator Program): IELTS 5.5 (indicators in all sections not below 5.0), TOEFL 68
  • Extended Program (Extended Accelerator Program): IELTS 5.0 (indicators in all sections no lower than 4.5), TOEFL 60

Special programs are designed for foreign students who plan to enter the bachelor's degree. Education includes a combination of first year academic courses, academic support, adaptation and cultural engagement. The goal of the eduaction is to bring the level of knowledge and English language in line with the requirements of the university, and to adapt the student to the education system and way of life. Course options:

  • Integrated Accelerator Program (2 semesters)
  • Academic Accelerator Program (2 semesters)
  • Extended program (Extended Accelerator Program) (3 semesters).

Each type of program includes three areas (to choose from), the emphasis during education is done on the relevant disciplines:

  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Information Technology
  • Business, finance and economics.

The learning process has a number of distinctive characteristics:

  • Choice. Following the system of education adopted in the US, students have the right to choose their own priority areas of science, which guarantees the development of responsibility and awareness and greater interest in learning
  • Support for students at all stages, both for academic and life issues. University specialists are ready at any time to provide the student with all the necessary assistance and advice. Staff working with students consists of: advisors for work with students, academic teachers, career counselors, academic advisors
  • A small number of people in the group, and as a result, individual attention to each student
  • Experience of American culture. In the process of studying, special seminars "live, learn, grow" are held, at which students receive maximum useful information about the structure of the education system, rules of conduct, culture and traditions of the USA, Illinois and the University. These classes involve students in a turbulent life and adapt them to a new country and society for themselves
  • Development of skills in employment and career. Students attend special seminars and classes, where they learn all the nuances of finding a job, finding a job and moving up the career ladder. Education at the International Year One (Undergraduate accelerator) takes place without loss of time - after the completion of the course students move to the second year of education of the basic educational programs of the bachelor degree for the chosen specialty.

Types of programs and sample curriculum:

Integrated program (Integrated Accelerator Program) (2 semesters).

The program is designed specifically for students who have a high level of English. Participants attend seminars on adaptation and the building of academic disciplines. In total, the course is estimated at 24 credits. Features of this type of program:

  • Individual support from mentors and teachers
  • Possibility to choose exclusive courses
  • Ability to learn programming
  • Extended career eduaction.

1. Semester 1:

  • Principles of microeconomics (with the English laboratory)
  • Mathematical Laboratory: Algebra and Computation (Level 2)
  • Natural sciences (with the English laboratory)

2. Semester 2:

  • Special seminars on adaptation "To live, learn, grow" (level 2)
  • Academic writing (level 2)
  • Introduction to Psychology
  • Fundamentals of media communications
  • Elective course on learning.

Academic Accelerator Program (2 semesters).

Program for students who need support in English. It consists of classes on adaptation, the body of disciplines and subjects and classes in English. Total for the program students earn at least 24 credits.

An approximate curriculum consists of:

1. Semester 1:

  • "To live, learn, grow" (level 1)
  • Option: English for academic purposes / academic writing
  • Fundamentals of microeconomics (with the English language laboratory)
  • Mathematical Course: Algebra and Computation (Level 2)
  • Natural Sciences (with the English Language Laboratory)

2. Semester 2:

  • "To live, to learn, to grow" (level 2)
  • Option: English for academic purposes / academic writing
  • Fundamentals of Psychology
  • A special course on learning skills.

Extended program (Extended Accelerator Program) (3 semesters).

A special feature of the program is active language involvement for the comprehensive development of English language skills. Includes special consultations, individual lessons, academic help and support. English is used in all courses and classes, students are intensively engaged and improve their level. For the course, each student must earn at least 30 credits.
