Summer science program in St Mary's School Ascot Summer Academic Camp
Summer program with a scientific bias (Academic Discovery) - 8-10 and 11-12 years
The academic program lasting 1-3 weeks is offered to both age groups - 8-10 and 11-12 years. It is an interesting and balanced course, helping not only to improve language competencies, but also to deepen knowledge in exact and natural sciences, art and design, to pass the basic introductory course STEM.
The program is divided into thematic weeks, for each of which students are given one "Big Question" - and within a week they should find an answer to it and justify it. Learning on the basis of clear facts, logic and analytics is interspersed with interesting, fun discussions and discussions: teachers actively use interactive and gaming techniques to make the most interesting for young schoolchildren. The complex interdisciplinary approach is very effective: it does not allow you to "rest" strictly in certain areas of knowledge, but gives information in the overall picture, teaching students to interact with each other, to see the connections between different facts and phenomena, and to compare data from different areas among themselves. The main topics and "Big Questions" in the camp can be, for example, the following:
- Rise of robots: a threat or benefit to a person? Students will review the history of robotics from the first mentions in the science fiction literature to modern applications.
- 185 days in space: a dream or a nightmare without gravity?
- Extreme planet: what can be done to protect people from natural disasters and disasters? How do people live in the most extreme and inappropriate places of our planet - zones of extreme cold, heat, humidity?
Invariably admire the students of modern, high-tech opportunities for scientific studies and experiments - for example, the portable planetarium Explorer Dome.
The intensity of the classes is from 16 hours per week, international classes include up to 16 people maximum. The program ends with a big debate on a given topic, as well as a solemn Rewarding Ceremony, where each student will receive a personal certificate indicating his achievements and successes.
