School description

The School of Visual Arts has been a leader in the education of artists, designers, creative professionals for over seven decades. With a faculty of outstanding working professionals, a dynamic curriculum, emphasis on critical thinking, SVA is a catalyst for innovation and social responsibility.

SVA was founded by co-founders Silas H. Rhodes and Burne Hogarth in 1947 as a School of Cartoonists and Illustrators. It began with three teachers and 35 students, most of whom were World War II veterans, so a significant portion of their education was paid for by the Military Act. The college was renamed the School of Fine Arts in 1956. The School began to award its first academic degrees in 1972, and by 1983 it had presented the first master's program in fine arts in painting, drawing and sculpture.
