Graphic designers influence the way people think by converting ideas, information, and emotions into visual symbols. Their work is behind the websites you surf, the packaging of your favorite products, the signage that helps you navigate a space, and the book that you just can’t put down. Wherever you look, graphic design is embedded into the world, persuading and informing what you see and do every day.

The Master of Design (MDes) in Graphic Design is a two-year degree program focused on an independent masters research project that offers students the opportunity to identify and explore a topic of inquiry with the potential to contribute to broader disciplinary knowledge. The program is equally concerned with thinking and making. The MDes in Graphic Design is an international program delivered in Chicago and Basel, Switzerland. Chicago-based students participate in the Basel School of Design summer workshops. The program culminates in a public exhibition of the master's research paper and project.

Students in this program will have the opportunity to learn to apply the fundamentals of design, typography, illustration and production procedures in creative communication problems and projects. In addition, students have the opportunity to learn how to meet the needs of clients quickly, creatively and economically. Training will be provided to give students the opportunity to design with the following software tools: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Flash, and Dreamweaver.

The Department of Art and Graphic Design is committed to excellence in undergraduate education, offering future graphic designers and studio artists a rewarding program in a personal, supportive and collaborative environment. Our department is integrated within the College of the Pacific's distinctive liberal arts program, the historical hallmark of our university. Faculty members are able to provide individual mentorship, enriched by their own professional experience as artists and designers, that gives students the opportunity to grow as artists and designers.

The Department of Art encompasses the creative activities of the fine arts (painting, sculpture, printmaking, and new media practices), the artistic applications of design, and the theoretical and historical concerns of art history. These complementary programs function together, so that the student gains not only depth of knowledge in a chosen specialty but also the breadth of experience that yields understanding of artistic traditions, values, cultural awareness, and contemporary issues. A faculty of exhibiting artists, practicing designers, published and respected historians, and strong studio programs focused on giving students facility with materials and familiarity with visual and theoretical concepts make the art department, in effect, an art school within a university.

Graphic designers create communications that educate, advocate and entertain. From the small hang tag on a piece of clothing to the oversized billboards in Times Square, from the books we read as children to the textbooks we learned from in school, from the magazines we read to the websites we visit and the films and videos we watch – Graphic Design is literally everywhere. For nearly 40 years, La Roche College graphic design students have gone on to become professional graphic designers, art directors, illustrators, interactive designers and publication designers. They work at firms such as Apple, American Eagle, Brunner Advertising, Lockerz and MAYA Design, creating logos and branding, designing packaging and brochures, developing ad campaigns and producing TV, web and print ads. Our current faculty, many of whom are practicing graphic designers or exhibiting artists, are able to bring their real-world knowledge back into the classroom to facilitate the best learning opportunities for our students. Our 13:1 faculty-to-student ratio allows students to connect with their professors on a level that allows them to grow and find their individual creative voice.
